The most successful caravan sites conserve the natural environment around them

A caravan site has been deemed to be damaging a conservation area following a series of complaints from members of the public.

The facility is situated near the St Cyrus National Nature Reserve was only opened on 22 September prior to a planning permission being submitted to Aberdeenshire Council.

Ewan Lawrie, Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) operations officer for the area, explained that the organisation has received complaints relating to caravans being on grassland that is considered an important area for the breeding of birds, butterflies and moths.

“We were contacted by members of the public about works near St Cyrus National Nature Reserve. It appears that part of these works have damaged some of the grassland which is a feature of the St Cyrus and Kinnnaber Links Site of Special Scientific Interest,” Mr Lawrie said.

While the site did not submit planning permission until later on, some parts and aspects of the facility do not require the approval.
