The All New Bailey Alliance Motorhome

By William Coleman

Having spent 3 weeks touring around Europe and Asia in a a Bailey motorhome I can personally vouch for how good these leisure vehicles are. Sturdy, spacious and a pleasure to drive. Following the success Bailey Of Bristol have had with motorhomes they are ready to launch the brand new Bailey Bailey Alliance motorhome at the NEC.

CaravanTimes have actually had some hands on experience with the new Alliance motorhome. We got the chance to spend a good few days testing it out and putting it through its paces, and it help up very well.

What with the latest release of their all new Bailey Phoenix range it seems that Bailey are redefining the term “entry level” with their caravan and amping up the quality of their mid range motorhomes. Some of the features that come as standard border the high models from other manufacturers.

The Alliance will sit right in the mid range between the entry level Alliance and the top end Autograph. You can find 6 different layouts in the Alliance range, which have been brought over from its little brother, the Advance but with a much more detailed high level finish.

Depending on what your touring requirements are you can choose from thee two berth options, the the compact 66-2, the 76-2, which features a French bed and rear washroom and the 76-2T, which has twin single beds and a rear washroom.

The next 3 layout are 4 berths, the 76-4 and 76-4T which both include rear washrooms and come with either a French bed or twin single beds. The extra beds are found in the front lounge of each model.

The sixth and final model is the 70-6 which is 6.59m long and is a 6 berth tourer which features an innovative rear lounge, something I am very keen on as I feel it makes a lot better usage of space.

Like all other Bailey motorhomes the Alliance has been built upon a 3.5 tonne Al-Ko chassis and is coupled with the popular, and every reliable, Peugeot Boxer. As standard the Alliance motorhome will have 160BHP as standard.

Inside the cab you will also find a whole range of “as standard” features, which will make you feel spoiled. You can expect it come with the Peugeot’s built in sat nav system, DAB digital radio, air conditioning and the sleek new graphite exterior paintwork.

Not only does the Alliance boast a very generous base level spec it also has had extra kit added to the habitation area to cement the Alliance’s position in Bailey’s mid level range.

One stand out feature for me is that it seems, something I will confirming on Tuesday at the NEC, that there may be an Fiamma wind out awning as standard. Another feature which stood out to me was the exterior 230V power outlet, you can charge your phone while enjoying the outside. Other onboard features include a Truma 100W solar panel, Status TV aerial and pre wiring for a rear view camera, all as standard.

The perks do not stop there! Inside the vehicle the slate effect finish on the worktop gives a very modern feel and brand new luxury furnishings make the whole layout and design feel brand new.

I do not want to give too much away as Bailey are launching this to the public on Tuesday at the NEC so I want to give them the chance to give you a full breakdown of what to expect from this fantastic new range. In the meantime you can visit Bailey online and have a look at the Alliance Motorhome

Caravan And Motorhome Show Preview Of Truma

By William Coleman

Next week the CaravanTimes team will be bringing you live coverage from the Caravan and Motorhome Show at the NEC Birmingham. So ahead of the UK’s largest caravan show I want show some highlights of what to expect from Truma.

Alde & Truma Cross Compatibility

When it comes to on board heating systems there are two brand names that instantly come to mind, Truma and Alde. Following some recent developments Alde’s Compact 3020 HE is now compatible with the Truma iNet System. On the Truma stand there will be demos available to show how you can use your Alde heating using the Truma tech.

Recognising the benefits of a product crossover Truma have made it possible for Alde customers who use, or would like to use, a Truma air conditioning system or Truma LevelControl.

Being able to use the iNet system also makes controlling the heat, air con, climate control and check how much gas has been used that much easier. All of this control at your fingertips via the smartphone, and now across multiple platforms, is a big game changer.

iNet-Ready Heater Control Panel

Customers simply connect the iNet Box to the heater and they’re ready to go. This panel is available now as standard on all 2019 models; which can be identified by the ‘iNet ready’ logo that is displayed when the control panel is switched on. If the logo is not there, the touch panel is not iNet ready and must be upgraded using a retrofit kit. This scenario applies to Compact 3020 HE heaters manufactured between 04/2014 and 04/2018. Older Alde Compact 3010 models cannot be retrofitted with the iNet System

Truma Aventa Compact Roof-Mounted Air Conditioning System

Truma’s new mini roof-mounted air conditioning system will soon be on the market to ensure we stay cool while not having to add larger models to our touring homes. I got to have at the Aventa in Germany in August and it really is very compact, so even the larger tourers will be able to fit this worry free.

So the name includes the word “compact” and that is exactly what you get. An extremely compact system that still delivers the power and energy needed to sleep under a somfy duvet in 30+ degree weather. The delivery of extremely fast with 1,700 W cooling. The size in no way diminish the power of the product.

“We have developed the Aventa compact specially for vans and small motor homes or caravans” explains Bernd Gerlach, Head of European Retail Management.

Not only is the new tech small but it is also ultra lightweight, weighing in at just 27.5kg. The Truma Avent compac is the lightest roof-mounted air conditioning system on the market. Do you have limited roof space? This will no longer be an issue.

Thanks to its low energy consumption of 2.8 A, it is also suitable for use on
campsites with weak fuse protection.

These are just a select few of the things you can expect from the Truma team at this year’s October NEC show. To see their innovative stand at the Salon you can watch the video we made for them last month in Germany here.

Caravan And Motorhome Club Insurance Choice Awards 2018 Win

By William Coleman

Everyone who has invested in a caravan or motorhome should then invest in an insurance policy. A lot of people do not, which baffles me, why would you buy something so expensive and not have it covered? Those who do insure their leisure vehicles are always on the lookout for the best policy and a trusted insurer. You may want to look at the Caravan And Motorhome Club as they have just been named Best Caravan Cover Provider at the Insurance Choice Awards 2018.

The Insurance Choice Awards, which are held by the financial services review platform Smart Money People, were set up help increase trust and transparency in financial services. Launched in 2016, they have quickly become the largest consumer-voted awards within the UK insurance industry, with well over 19,000 consumers taking part this year. The awards find the best possible insurance products and providers on the market.

An award win like this is just another feather in the cap for The Club as they continue to move forward to help provide the best all round service and experience for their members. The fact that the Club won the award again demonstrates how its members appreciate both the expertise and service that its hard working insurance team offers.

Harvey Alexander, Director of Marketing for the Caravan and Motorhome Club, said: “We are delighted to have been recognised again by the Insurance Choice Awards, this time for our excellent new Caravan Cover scheme. The Club has over 50 years’ experience of creating products for our million-plus members, which we design to reflect their ever changing needs, so it’s really rewarding to receive this award that was voted for by them.

“The Club has been inspiring people to have adventures in the UK and abroad for 111 years. Our experience means that the Caravan Cover and customer service provided by our extremely knowledgeable staff is unrivalled, and ensures our members can enjoy their holiday knowing that they are covered with an award winning product. Our Caravan Cover is the most popular financial services product taken out by our members and it offers a wide range of features and benefits.”

Being a Club member really does come with a wave of benefits, offers and deals and the Caravan Cover is one if the best in my opinion. The protection covers your caravan from theft, loss or damage operates in a similar way to caravan insurance. The main difference from your normal caravan insurer is that you’re protected directly by The Club which means you deal with them and them only, no annoying third party brokers, from start to finish.

Kampa Caravan And Motorhome Awnings

By William Coleman

Over the past week or two I have been scrolling through the exhibitor list for this year’s NEC show so I can then highlight who I feel are must see exhibitors, Click here. Last week when I was doing my research I came across what Kampa had on display and really liked the look of their Air Break Pro 3 and 5. So I dug a little deeper to find out what else I could see myself using and saw that the Kampa awning range are a bit of a stand out product.

Kampa make awnings for pretty much every vehicle you can get your hands on, even car awnings, all of which have been designed to handle every season and weather type you’re likely to find while touring.

Due to the versatile Kampa range it was very hard to pick a favourite so I thought I would start at the top with Kampa’s 2019 models which you will see on display in Hall 12 at the NEC Caravan and Motorhome show next week.

For the motorhome owners among you I would strongly suggest looking at the Motor Ace AIR All-Season 400 (pictured below) which is brand new for 2019 and the Motor Rally Drive-Away AIR Pro awnings.

The Motor Rally AIR Pro Drive-Away has 3 different models, all of which come in sizes to suit the touring vehicle you have. Both the 260 and 390 are brand new sizes for 2019 which will also be on display at the NEC. Kampa has seen some real success with these motorhome awnings throughout Europe last year and are keen on keeping the momentum going.

These best selling models make motorhome holidays with an awning so much easier. There have been times in the past where I have seen people actually pack up everything, set off for the day and then come back and pitch up again. That will not be necessary with these Kampa models. They have been designed to allow you to leave it standing on site while you go off on your adventures.

Motor Rally Pro

Updated for 2019, the Motor Rally AIR Pro Drive-Away now features doors in the rear tunnel of the awning allowing for convenient access to the vehicle without going through the awning.

The free standing Motor Rally Drive-Away is very easily set up and takes a matter of minutes to erect. Being able to inflate through a single point via the high quality pump, which is actually supplied, means that within no time at all you can be set up and ready to relax.

Now for the caravanners out there you should be looking at the Kampa Grande AIR All-Season 330 and the 390, both models are also new for 2019 and can be seen at the NEC.

The 330 comes with a floor plan of 330cm wide with a dimension of 300cm. Having a 300cm deep awning really does extend the amount of outer living space and is one of the largest Kampa offer. Having 3 meters of space is amazing and I can imagine you’d have so much space you’d be stuck with what to do with it, or just throw a party for your neighbours.

Over the past 2 years most sites I have visited have been pretty much fully booked which is a clear sign that winter touring is becoming increasingly popular. With an AIR All-Season you really can make the most of your caravan all year round.

The AIR All-Season has all the features and benefits of the Rally AIR models but with the added mega 3 meter depth. Unlike other awnings the All-Season has been designed for extended use and has been adapted to support the most extreme weather conditions. What with the recent storms we have had and a potential sub zero temperature the Four-Season fabric will make a world of difference this winter.

How about a classic looking awning with all the up to date modern design technology? Look no further than the Kampa Club AIR Pro range.

The stand out feature for me, apart from the vintage look, is the staggering 275cm depth. Each model (330, 390, 450 and 390 Plus L/H & R/H) features the Club AIR Pro’s Dual Pitch roof which boasts a striking front apex, offering a unique aesthetic and providing masses of headroom. The Club’s feature loads of ventilation to combat condensation, and as with all of the awnings mentioned above, feature Kampa’s Single Point Inflation system – setting these awnings up really is a breeze. Reversible zip-out side panels allow for great optional extras too, the Pro annexe and Tall annexe are great for guests and storage, whilst the Conservatory annexe is perfect for soaking up those off season rays.

Now that you have had a small teaser of what Kampa have to offer you can put them on your “to visit list” for the NEC. With all the innovation we are seeing with Kampa you can guarantee 365 day holidays with their awnings. To see the full range of Kampa products visit them at the NEC next week and be sure the pay their website a visit, Kampa.co.uk

The island bed vs. the make-up bed

By William Coleman

The world of the leisure vehicle is a diverse one, to say the very least. You can pick a motorhome, caravan, trailer tent, van conversion or something a bit more customer built like a converted fire truck, yes that exists, and be on holiday at the drop of a hat. What ever your vehicle of choice there is one thing that has people split right down the middle- The island bed or the make up?

Without a doubt both of these bed types have a very long list of pros and cons and if anything there is no real answer, it’s all down to your own personal preference. Each caravan layout will appeal to someone for their specific needs.

Take for example a couple who go away a lot, they may favour the island bed as it does not compromise the living space. Where as if you give that same van to a family of 4 then it means that once the children are put to bed, presumably in the living area, you are pretty much confined to the island bed or awning, provided you can sneak past the kids without waking them up.

The Make Up Bed

So the make up bed is the most common type of bed, it dominates the market. So then this must be the winner, right? If its more common does than mean its better? I would say “no”. Just because there is more does not make it a better.

The space provided by having a make up bed is great and really does free up the rest of the van. You can have a larger living space as well as bigger washing areas, bathrooms, kitchens etc.

Once the make up bed is made you do have a much larger sleeping area. So if you are looking for the biggest bed possible look no further than a make up bed. It is perfect for both couples and families alike.

One drawback of the make up bed is in the title, you have to make the bed up of an evening then put it away in the morning. After a long drive and then setting up the caravan, awning, tables chair and everything else the last thing you want to do it make a bed.

Is the making of the bed that much of a chore though? Not really, not now days anyway. You can have the frame out in a few seconds and you’re halfway there. The only part that I find a nuisance is arranging the cushions into the right formation. For those who are good at Tetris can figure this out pretty quickly, but for the newcomer it can take a little getting used to. Which leads me to my next point, which is a negative one.

I am a very light sleeper and I have a few musts for when I am sleeping, I promise I’m not a primadonna. Once the cushions are laid out I really do not like the gaps and grooves that occur with a make up bed. When I roll around an elbow or a knee can slip into the dip and I find it really uncomfortable.

Before bed it can be an issue too, trying to roll off of the bed save falling between the gaps. The way round this would be to buy a mattress topper, like I did, but this does then bring on an extra level of expense. I did buy a cheaper one but found it made little to no different so I ended up sinking £100 into a memory foam one.

Also there is the matter of keeping it clean, like any bed for that matter. Part of holiday is relaxing and having a lay in so why not have breakfast in bed once in a while. So not only are you using the cushions for sleeping and sitting on you are also using the same padding during the day which provides a lot of room for spillage.

Fixed singles are great though. On my 3 week tour with Bailey of Bristol I never slept so soundly on anything other than the fixed single bed. The small comfortable singles were an absolute delight and I enjoyed my nights sleep on the single over the make up. Having the 2 singles also helps families with children. Once the children are in bed you can have free roam of pretty much the entire caravan without waking up the babies.

If you have a smaller van for that quick get away then the 2 berth make up bed is absolutely perfect, especially if it is your first van.

The Island Bed

Option 2 of the caravan bed world comes in various shapes and sizes, some even require some assembly before you can hop on too.

Remove the need for a full assembly and do you really get a better bed and holiday experience? Some would argue it is the way forward and than the make up bed will be made obsolete by the fixed island bed.

Now once you have made your choice on the island bed you then move on to choice number 2, which may be even harder than the first. Transverse, rear bed or French bed (corner bed)? All 3 options present a unique experience and dramatically change the layout of a van.

So as this is more of an “opinion” piece I will address my least favourite of the 3 possible options. The French corner bed is not one I am keen on at all. It is like having the wall side of the bed at home. What do you do if nature calls during the evening? Climb over the other half and risk waking them up, that’s what. This, and this alone, would put me off of having a corner bed.

Now onto the 2 island bed options than seem to be becoming increasingly popular. With the layout designs that you get with these it’s easy to see why they are gaining so much momentum, especially in the 8ft wide models.

Right off the bat I am going to highlight some negatives that come with the island bed, because I am mostly positive on this topic.

Transverse 4 berth models with a rear bathroom! I just do not see the value in blocking the bathroom off after dark. Yes most sites have onsite restrooms and shower blocks but at night who wants to venture to those.

Most families buy 4 berth caravans. With having a rear bathroom your bedroom becomes a walkway to the toilet. Not my idea of a fantastic lay out. On the flip side of that is this 4 berth layout being used by just 2 people. Here comes a positive.

If you living area is the opposite end to the bathroom is does add that desired level of privacy when using the bathroom/washroom. So if 2 of you are using this layout then it works very well.

If you have an a rear island bed then you get the bathroom in the middle of the van which does separate day and night living very well. You simply close both sides of the bathroom and you have total isolation from the living area. Great for having guests over if you choose to put the kids to sleep on the island bed.

Some vans have a folding door that does not provide much in the way of separation where has others have a solid wood sliding doors which does a lot more to separate things.

More often than not when we go away and meet friends onsite there tends to be a few late nights, not always with wine but some of the time. So after a belly full of BBQ food and some drinks it is nice to be able to just fall onto the bed and not worry about making it.

I am an early riser, no matter what time I go to sleep the previous evening. In the past my early rising has not gone down very well, especially with a make up bed. As soon as I wake up that’s it I have to get moving. Using an island bed means you can go to the living area and relax in there while others sleep well into the morning. Everyone’s a winner in that scenario.

Another clear advantage of the is having enough space on either side of the bed. You can simply wake up and move freely without having to climb over anyone. The bedside tables/cabinets that come with them are good too. Somewhere for me to place my phone and glasses of an evening. Very handy indeed.

Twin axle vans with island bed is my personal van of choice, with a middle bathroom. This works for a couple, family or sharing with friends. You get the sleeping space you need seperate from day living as well as lots or practical space. For me it is a win win.

What about the rest of the CaravanTimes team. What is there layout of choice?

Tom– Due to the amount of driving I do and working out of the van I enjoy a motorhome with an electric drop down bed. I know that is a bit of a curve ball but for work purposes it suits me down to the ground. But with a towing van I do like a make up bed. They are bigger and you get a lot more space throughout the van.

James– I really like an island bed. I lay in whenever possible when I am away so having a nice bed that is just like the one at home just makes me sleep a lot better. Once the blinds are pulled and all the doors are shut it feels just like home.

Daniel– Make up bed with two fixed singles at the rear. With 2 small children it means when we are away bedtime stays bed time. We put them in their beds and then we use the lounge for relaxing, watching a film and then within 20 seconds the large double bed is ready, which usually end up with us waking up to find two little people tucked in next to us.

So there you have it. 4 different opinions from 4 different people. But what makes the perfect bed set up for you? Let us know!

Levelling Made Easy With Lock n Level

By William Coleman

So you pull up to your site of choice, pick out the ideal pitch and then it starts to get dark before you even begin to pitch up. We have all been there a thousand times before and will again I’m sure. So once the sun goes down pitching up becomes that little bit trickier, especially the leveling. You can drastically reduce the time it takes to level by using the innovative Lock’n’Level.

There are many different ways to level your caravan or motorhome, and let’s face it they are all a bit time consuming and downright fiddley. My pet hate is the leveling of a caravan as it tends to lead to bickering due to miscommunication, especially when using chocks.

Chocks are one of the more popular methods, very much so with motorhomes, as on paper it seems like the easiest and quickest. My experience has been the opposite of easy due to several factors, the main one being I do not have a motor mover. Using the clutch control to move onto the chocks to ensure you are level and the wheels are in the correct position takes far too much time.

Due to this the system I use is a bit like the Chuckle Brother, “To me to you” communication between me and the partner. Which as I mentioned can sometimes lead to a little bit of arguing with the person guiding you on. And once I am on you can guarantee that 9 times out of 10 your wheel is not in line for the Alko wheel lock.

If you use a soft pitch and it rains you can sometimes run the risk of the van sinking slightly due to the moist soft ground, and yes I have a horror story about that happening. Waking up lopsided is not ideal when a monsoon is taking place outside.

So what other alternatives are out there to make life easier? How about air? Yes air. An inflatable to help level the caravan and save a lot times. This is where Lock’n’Level come in to save the day.

The great thing about using the Lock’n’Level is just how quick and easy it is. From start to finish it will take less than 10 minutes, and that includes the inflation and leveling. With such a simple design you can be up and running in no time at all in any weather on any surface.

Who are Lock’n’Level

Lock’n’Level was created by two friends, Derek and Terry, who met caravanning 30 years ago and have been friends ever since.

The pair understood the need for a leveling system that was light, portable and most importantly user friendly. When you have been pitching up and levels for years on end it can become a tad tiresome.

After trying to find one for themselves they soon realised that there is no such product on the market. From there the Lock’n’Level idea was created and is the only product of its kind.

Not having much of a budget to create, bearing in mind it was an idea they had off the top if their heads, Derek and Terry had to be a bit creative and ended up using an old airbag they found at a scrap yard. After some initial crude tests, and an exploded airbag, it seemed like the idea was a winner and they can see that this product will benefit every caravanner who uses it.

The airbag may have popped under the weight of a single axle van but the point was proven, this does work. Now they had the idea worked it was time to design, build and develop a version that would support a single and twin axle caravan. That was a decade ago in 2008. 50 were made and sold and that was the launch of the Lock’n’Level business and here we are 10 years later.

How Does It Work?

Unlike most leveling systems which you have to have several attempts to get right, unless you are a caravan master, the Lock’n’Level can have you leveled up on the first go. The Lock’n’Level employs the method of inflation to achieve the perfect leveling, it’s really that simple.

Step 1

Lay out your Lock’n’Level next the the caravan wheel once the van is stationary. Once you have your chosen your spot simply reverse the van and slide the Lock’n’Level to where you want the tires to be once parked. Once the inflation pad is in place drive onto the pad with the tires directly parked in the centre. Always put the handbrake on once you are in the chosen position.

Step 2

For step two you are going to need an air pump or compressor, some new vehicles actually come with this over a spare tire. So make sure you purchase one of these if you do not already have one.

Simply attach the air nozzle the Lock’n’Level and inflate to your desired amount. Using a spirit level on board, most smartphones now come with an app for this, you can measure the level and then adjust accordingly.

Step 3

Once you are level simply lower the steadies and you are ready to enjoy your first cup of tea, or bottle of beer.

So after what should take around 5-6 minutes your van is totally level, locks are on and nobody got into are argument over the minor adjustments needed to fit onto chocks. With 2 models available, single and twin axle, you will be a raise of 6″ using the Lock’n’Level.

You will never had to just settle with “as good as its gonna’ get” anymore with one of these devices and the time you say setting up can be spent enjoying your leisure time. To find out more or purchase you can visit the team on their website, Lock’n’Level.

If you like the look of the these innovative creations be sure to say hello to the team at the NEC Caravan and Motorhome Show this month in Birmingham. The show takes place 16th-21st and we are actually running a competition for 10 pairs of free tickets so you can see these guys for free.

A Close Look At Kampa Products On Show At The NEC

By William Coleman

The 2018 NEC Caravan and Motorhome Show is just over 2 weeks away and we are already far too excited. Over the next couple of weeks we will be bringing you some brands and products that have really caught our eye.

One company that we are looking forward to seeing is Kampa. A brand which goes hand in hand with touring holidays. If you go camping, caravanning or motorhoming Kampa will have products that will suit.

Kampa have been a staple of the leisure accessory market now for well over 20 years. Due to the hard work and design ethic that Kamper employ they are one of Europe’s most recognisable brands.

The Kampa awning ranges have always been one of their strongest products, in both design and sales. Only using tried and tested materials to bring a finished product to rival any other on the market.

So before we see them we want to give you a little sneak peak spoiler free look at some of the fantastic products they will be displaying at the UK largest caravan show.

There are two products that I would recommend looking at when visiting the Kampa stand in Hall 12 at the NEC. The AIR Break Pro 3/5 (This is a new product for 2019 and is something completely new, we think it’s a world first. It’s made of their Pro awning material and suitable for use with Kampa awnings or freestanding. It will create a lot of excitement at the show I’m sure!

AIR Break Pro 3 and 5

When it comes to pitching up I can sometimes have a tendency to rush things, which usually means I take twice as long fixing the mistakes I’ve made. When it comes to awnings the thought of having to fit attachments to them makes me slightly nervous. But an inflatable one that attaches with ease? Sign me up.

Having gone through the product details, listed below, and what stands out the most to me is the fact that you can create your own personal living space using the Air Break Pro 3 or 5. Not only do they provide a nice private space to relax in but it also help keep your dog, or infants, from wandering off to see the neighbours. The attachment works as both free standing and connected.

Using the AIR Break models could not be easier thanks to the Kampa’s unique AirFrame system with single point inflation. The AIR Break is surprisingly sturdy in the wind and uses WeathershieldT Pro material, making it a great match for the AIR Pro awnings.

The AIR Break is available in 3 and 5 panel versions. The AIR Break 3 is designed to fit awnings between 200 to 330 cm wide and the AIR Break 5 is designed to fit awnings between 330 to 500 cm wide.

I can’t wait to see this product in action at the NEC and may even invent in one. One way I would use it would to close of my pitch at night. Instead of packing away the Cadac, chairs and table into the awning, compromising living space, simply tuck it all away behind the AIR Break. Out of sight out of mind.

Key Features of the AIR Break 3

  • Fits: 200 – 30 cm awnings
  • Weight: 8.9 Kg
  • Materials: WeathershieldT Pro Material. 6000 mm hydrostatic head. 300 Denier

Key Features of the AIR Break 5

  • Floor plan: Variable
  • Materials: WeathershieldT Pro Material. 6000 mm hydrostatic head. 300 Denier

Newcomers To The Life Of Caravanning- Interview With Here We Tow

By William Coleman

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting a couple who are brand new to the caravan holiday scene and they instantly fell in love with everything that comes with using a caravan for your holiday. They love it so much that they have taken to caravanning full time and run their own YouTube channel based on their adventures.

Karina and Jules Ingham had never been on a caravan or motorhome holiday, something that was about to drastically change for them in early 2017. But where do you start in a world that has such a wide variety of leisure vehicle? Do you start small with a camper to get the feel for it? Maybe a motorhome so you’ve got bigger portable living space? Or do you dive head first into the deep end start towing right off the bat? And just like that Here We Tow was born!

Once they purchased their ideal caravan the pair had so much fun they wanted to share their experiences with everyone else. Since purchasing their Adria Adora Isonzo they decided to start up their own video blog on where they share all their adventures and help other newcomers to the world of caravan holidays.

After speaking with them I wanted know more about their journey into the world of caravan holidays. With so many new couples and families investing in caravans I wanted to get a fresh perspective of what is drawing so many new faces.

What made you decide to get into caravanning?

After years of travelling abroad we decided it would be great to start travelling at home and in Europe, especially with having our dog Fudge, he could come along too. We were finding all the hours sat waiting for flights due to delays and the increasing costs were starting to put us off foreign travel. We had been considering a caravan for a few years but didn’t know anything about them. We decided to throw caution to the wind and go for it.

You traveled round to see a few different locations looking for your ideal caravan. What were you looking for in a van?

Something big! When we started looking we both wanted space, a fixed island bed and a home away from home. We had our budget and luckily we were in agreement about what we were looking for. As we were looking to holiday in it for about 12 weeks a year we wanted something comfortable. We were looking at twin axles and had decided on a dealer special until we came across Adria. As soon as we went to see the caravan we were sold on it, it was perfect for us. A caravan is a personal choice, our advice is research and take your time.

During your touring time where have you visited and what was your top location?

There are so many amazing sites all over the Country it would be hard to narrow this down but the South West is beautiful and there are many amazing sites. The great thing about caravanning is the freedom to hitch up and travel, just find a site that suits you, and if you don’t like it you can move on. The UK offers so much and we intend to get out there and see a lot more of it.

There is a lot to learn when you first start caravanning. Any horror stories, or “learning curves”?

Thankfully we’ve had no disasters, yet. The worst experience was in Cornwall when Jules navigated us down a narrow country lane that turned out to also be closed. Towing our 8ft wide Adria, I held my breath for about 5 minutes and Jules had his eyes closed, we didn’t speak for an hour after that experience. Our advice to all new caravanning folk is take your time with everything, don’t rush, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

From what I can see this has really changed your lives. What has been the biggest change since entering the world of caravanning?

Since we started caravanning we have had a huge life change. We took early retirement and in June we took up a position as Wardens at a 5 Star Park in Dorset. We started our YouTube channel and we cannot believe how this has taken off and the opportunities this has led to, including this interview with CaravanTimes!

We just set out to help other new starters like other YouTube channels helped us. We have also met some amazing people in the caravan and motorhome community, we’ve made new friends that are like members of the family. It’s been a wonderful experience and a great life change.

What does the future hold for the ‘Here we Tow’ team?

We will be at the NEC next for the show which is where it all really started last year. We have a few trips booked for 2018 still and will be reviewing two caravans on a real holiday, which is what a lot of people really want to see. We have a few product reviews to do too. In to 2019 we are exploring a few more projects but April we have a tour booked in and May we are hoping to cross the channel and see how far we can get.

Where can we find you guys?

You can find us on our Here We Tow YouTube Channel, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram

Club Chief Talks Growing Market With Lake District Park

By William Coleman

Over the past 2 years the UK tourism industry has seen a real boom. With people from all around the world choosing the UK for their holidays, especially when it comes to caravan holidays and park holidays. All across the board sites are improving their facilities and holiday opportunities, which has not gone unnoticed by the Caravan and Motorhome Club.

Senior executives from CAMC traveled to the Lake District to take a behind the scenes look at a site that is meeting the demand in staycation opportunities.

Skelwith Fold in Ambleside was the venue for the visit following a study tour earlier in summer to the Club’s Coniston Park Coppice by members of BH&HPA’s Cumbria branch.

Director General of The Caravan and Motorhome Club was there for the delegation, the aim of which was to see how one of the Club’s commercial counterpart have been adapting to the ever evolving UK holiday market.

Henry Wild, Skelwith Ford’s Director, led the Nick Lomas on a tour of the 130 acre grounds. Mr. Wild said there is plenty of evidence that this year has shown a massive surge in demand for UK based holidays.

A trend, he feels, is bringing a lot more families around to the notion of British park based holidays, or ‘staycations’. Another new holiday type which is attracting the masses to parks is ‘glamping’, glamorous camping to you and I. Due to the wide publicity across TV shows and media the glamping craze has done wonders for parks across the UK.

This year Henry added safari tents to the sites existing glamping options at Skelwith Fold where 450 plus pitches also provide holiday home ownership and touring facilities.

The park’s touring guests, according to Henry, include a number of Caravan and Motorhome Club members and that the “cross pollination” of visitors are a benefit to both parks and customers alike.

Like the Club, said Henry, parks such as his recognised the importance of keeping quality standards on an ever-rising trajectory to match customer expectations.

Nick Lomas, Caravan and Motorhome Club director general, said: “It’s so important that the UK touring industry works together to improve the quality, standards and experiences which our places provide, so we can encourage even more people to enjoy the outdoors!

“The growing number of family groups sharing time together is common among both Skelwith Fold customers and Caravan and Motorhome Club members,” added Nick.

Last year, Skelwith Fold – which has been owned by the Wild family for over 20 years – was the winner of the Holiday Park of the Year title from Cumbria Tourism.

With so many different holidays types now available in the UK, along with younger people buying into the caravan world, it seems that our holiday economy will stay strong despite a slightly rocky looking future.

Mercedes Set Sites On Touring Future At The NEC

By William Coleman

The name Mercedes is not one that you may initially link to touring holidays. Now it seems that the luxury manufacturer have set their eyes on the caravan and motorhome industry with their new range of touring vehicles. At this year’s October NEC Mercedes-Benz Vans UK Ltd will be showcasing a variety of vehicles designed to inspire your future holiday adventures.

At this year’s Birmingham NEC show you will be able to find Mercedes-Benz Vans UK Ltd Hall 20m Stand 25, where they will be displaying their very best motorhomes and campervans. I have spent some time in the Mercedes Marco Polo which is a fantastic campervan that is cram packed with all new innovation and tech so I am excited to see what’s new from Mercedes.

Also on display will be the new Sprinter AL-KO low frame chassis, new Sprinter Van and Chassis Cab Motorhomes. Over the past few years the masses have flocked to staycation style leisure holidays and I can see Mercedes being a go to touring home for a lot of people.

The Mercedes Sprinter camper van combines the high end driving experience that comes with all Mercedes vehicles and the practical living space that you’d expect to find in a van conversion. My personal preference is the rear make up bed where you can open the back doors and watch the world go by.

Steve Bridge, Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz Vans UK Ltd, added: “Our presence at the Motorhome and Caravan Show demonstrates the diverse range of vehicles Mercedes-Benz Vans has to offer.

“With the versatility and reliability of our vehicles plus the array of safety technology and innovation, there’s something for everyone.”

Fiat have the market for motorhomes and coachbuild, with Ford slowly starting to creep into the UK market. Yes there are some motorhomes built on a Mercedes but not as many as Ford or Fiat. With such a turn on holiday trends will the UK start see a lot more Mercedes leisure vehicles on the road?

The Motorhome and Caravan Show takes place at the Birmingham NEC from 16 – 21 October 2018.
