Mystery Shopper Earns Site Award Shortlist

By William Coleman

The mystery shopper, you either love them or hate them. Either way there is no denying that their job does the very best it can at providing impartial and accurate feedback about a product, service or company. For one lucky park they have had the best type of mystery shopper feedback there is, it has even lead them to an award shortlist.

Devon’s Ladram Bay holiday park was helped this summer by a visit from a mystery staycationer. Now the park is on its way to potentially winning gold, silver or bronze at the county’s annual tourism awards in November.

The mystery shopper who visited Ladram Bay was actually an undercover inspector who was carry out one of the crucial judges stages of the Devon Tourism Awards. The visit was one of the 120 that was made to business by the county judges helping to shave down the entries to just three per category. So you can see that the cream of the crop made the shortlist.

Ladram Bay is no stranger to awards nominations, this is the third year in a row that the site has made the nomination stages of Holiday Park of the Year category.

Speaking with Director Zoe House, a member of the park-owning family, said that everyone at Ladram Bay had a special reason for crossing their fingers and toes in an effort to bag the gold top spot.

“In 2018 we are celebrating our seventy-fifth anniversary of the park’s formation, and it would be wonderful to start the year with such an accolade!” she said.

“But even to feature among the top three parks in Devon is an excellent achievement to which we owe a great debt of honour to our fantastic staff.

“An important criterion for these awards is the standard of hospitality which guests receive, and responsibility for delivering this is very much down to our park team,” added Zoe.

Ladram Bay originally started as a small cliff side resort with private beach access. Now it has grown into one of Devon’s largest and most celebrated parks.

Their verdicts on who takes the top spots will be delivered at a VIP awards ceremony at Plymouth’s Guildhall on 23 November.

Ready Camp. A Season Of Success

By William Coleman

More great news for the glamping world as Ready Camp, the official glamping network of The Camping and Caravanning Club, is rejoicing as the number of people staying on sites this year has grown. This has followed the addition of ten new sites to its network of UK glamping locations.

To add even more success to their already glistening portfolio Ready Camp is ending a successful season by becoming a finalist in the Best Holiday Rental for Families category at the 2017 Family Traveller Awards.

Ever since the launch in 2015 the network of sites that have added glamping to its attractions have grown from 17 in Ready Camp’s first year to 29 in 2016 and then 39 for this year’s camping season. All of the sites have proven very popular this year with new locations at Mablethorpe in Lincolnshire and Dartmouth being very well received by journalists from The Daily Star and The Sun.

Ready Camp also report that their locations in the South West of England have so seen a large growth in glamping nights sold of 71% year on year.

Reday Camp’s glamping accommodation are safari style tents that can sleep up to 6 people. As for adults they recommend that 4 adults would fit perfectly for a get away. Each tent comes with a triple bunkbed, double bed, seating area and a dining table. On top of that there is also a small kitchen area.

Ready Camp Sites Director Bob Hill said: “Ready Camp continues to prove popular with holidaymakers who camp infrequently and those who have little to no experience of camping.

“All Ready Campers appreciate the convenience of a pre-pitched glamping tent with facilities on hand and I’m thrilled we’ve been shortlisted in the Best Holiday Rental for Families category at this year’s Family Traveller Awards – we certainly look forward to welcoming more families to our glamping locations next year.”

At the end of the 2017 glamping season more than 10% of sales for glamping came from Read Campers who booked for than one tent for their glamping trips with friends and family. An announcement on the expansion of the Ready Camp network will be made early in the New Year.

IOW Caravan Owner’s £1.6M Loss

By William Coleman

Members of the Rookley Country Park on the Isle of Wight are heading toward some hard times. They face the prospect of potentially losing their holiday homes following a park takeover.

As you can all imagine the loss of your holiday home and or its location is a very big blow. The residents are plot owners of Rookley Country Park could have a joint loss of an estimated £1.57 million. This was reported last month and will affect around 70 distraught residents who were mortified to discover that they are being forced to leave to park and make way for the total rejuvenation of the site. Although it is good that site has been bought and will be invested in it still leaves a lot of current members in a very bad spot.

The new development of the site will see a lot of new additions brought in. There will be new lodges positioned around the lake, upgraded entertainment and the pool area will be getting an upgrade too. On Top of that there should be new caravan hires made available. All of this will be brought in at the cost of the current caravan owners using the park, they have to move to make the land free for development.

The main fear is that the current owners will not find another suitable place to store homes now they are having to leave Rookley Country Park. Rookley Country Park did issue a sincere apology regarding the matter.

Following the news around 30 owners met the Chequers pub to speak with the campaigner and caravan owner, Paul St John Martin, regarding the move and how it could financially impact those being forced to move from the site.

Mr. St John Martin revealed that the combined cost that the owners will be out of pocket would be around the £1.5m when they lose the vans.

The Island MP Bob Seeley has vowed to help in this situation to protect the rights of the current caravan owners. Mr Seely has expressed great sympathy for the nightmare that the residents find themselves in.

He has said that he will be writing to the new owners company, a company based in the USA, as well as the the Citizens’ Advice in regards to some form of compensation due to the losses the residents could suffer.

Mr Seely added he would also be looking into lobbying Parliament about the issues raised.
Rookley Park said: “Unfortunately, the extent of the work required is such some owners will have to move their holiday homes elsewhere.”.

I am all for developing new parks and sites around the UK but this seems like a lot of people’s lives are having to change, not for the better, to make way for these upgrades.

What A Difference 20 Years Makes

By William Coleman

I was born during the October half term holiday way back when in 1987. Since then my family would go to Devon every year to the Sandy Bay Haven holiday park. For the next decade I would spend the October half term at the Sandy Bay site and look forward to the next year as soon as we left to head back to London. The last time we went was on my 10th birthday, and now 20 years on I look back at those fond years to see just how much the caravan holiday has changed over the past 2 decades.

There are so many things that I remember vividly about visiting Devon; spotting the Beast of Bodmin Moor, the live wrestling shows, Crealy Adventure, going down the buzzard swoop slide, the Canonteign Waterfall park and the evening entertainment the park would put on.

Having seen whats on offer now it certainly dwarfs what I had back in the early to mid 90’s. Now there is so much more, a lot of which does not include the human element of entertainment. More rides, slides and arcades. It seems that the live show of an evening and the singing and dancing entertainment is something of the past.

I will never forget arriving late on a Friday evening, half asleep, to find out that there was going to be live wrestling on in the main bar of the entertainment club house. Instantly I woke up and pleaded that we go and watch, there was a bar there so I did not have to convince mum and dad too much after the 4 and a half hour drive. And now there are rides and lots more arcades and even a Starbucks! The pool area has certainly had an upgrade. Now the kids can use mini jet skis and even do SCUBA lessons! A far cry from the freezing October plunge that I used to take, much to the amusement of the family and friends we would go with.

The thing I loved about this site was the large static caravans we would stay in. At the time I had never seen a caravan like it. I was used to the small little ones you would see sitting on people’s drive ways. These were far more glamorous they seemed like luxury small homes. They would have a good size living room/dining room/kitchen combo. Each morning you would get woken up by the sound of a thousand seagulls trampling on the roof, years later I found out that my dad would throw bread on the roof so the seagulls would sweep down and be blamed for waking everyone up. Good work dad. We would all then jump up, have a cooked breakfast and plan where we would go. The ladies would go and do horse riding and the gents would go fishing then at the end of the day we would all go back to the caravan and get ready for the live entertainment.

Now it seems all the activities are based on spending money on rides and attractions. I understand that holiday parks are businesses and to operate they need to make money, but I feel that this sometimes is at the expense of what made everyone fall in love with these sites when we were young. The world moves on and us with it, I guess.
After a 20 year gap there is one thing that has not changed, the locals of the area. Not too far away from the site is the old untouched parts of Exeter. Little squares with traditional tea rooms and the local home made pastie maker who tells you locals stories and spooky yarns. I always loved the human element of the area. There was one cafe called The Lion The Witch & The Wardrobe. They made all their cakes in house and were all perfect. The Death By Chocolate was a stand out for sure. A cake as big as the child who ordered it.

All in all it seemed like my half term holidays in Devon were a lot simpler 20 years ago. What would amuse and entertain us as children would now bore the iPad generation to sleep.

Catch Up With CAMC Food & Beverage Team

By William Coleman

A couple of month ago we caught wind of a £1 million development of the Knaresborough Caravan and Motorhome Club site, we even wrote an article about it. One of the main things that stuck out to me was their new Wanderer Bar & Kitchen Concept. I was able to speak with CAMC’s Food, Beverages and Site Facilities Manager, Jessica Cleaver, regarding the concept and what it means to the local community.

One of the most interesting things about the Wanderer is how they source the ingredients that go into their dishes. All the meat, fish, fruit and vegetables are locally sourced. For me this is fantastic step for the Caravan and Motorhome Club. I like the fact they are taking the responsibility of keeping local independant business going buy using them to stock their bar and kitchen unlike a lot of eateries who buy bulk frozen produce, and still charge £12 for a burger without chips.

Another thing that this means is that the food you are ordering is as fresh as it gets. Their lamb is driven in from a farm that is just 19 miles away from the kitchen it’s cooked in. The furthest away your dinner is brought in from is 45 miles away in Nesham and that is where your high quality fresh beef is reared. So as The Club say, there food really is “Grown here not flown here”.

If you are having a nice comfy night in but do not really fancy cooking for everyone but at the same time you do not really want to leave your motorhome or caravan for too long, do not worry because the Wanderer also do a take away menu. The takeaway menu is not as large as the in house menu but it is far from small. You get pick from a great range off of the starters, mains, grill, pizza, salad, pudding or plank menu. On top of that there is a sharer menu and sides. You will be spoilt for choice if you pick off of the plank menu which provides a nice mix of things to share between two people.

If you do sit in the restaurant with the kids there are different menu options depending on the age of your little ones. There is a child’s menu, a toddlers menu and then a smaller menu. Too often do you get the kids food of the kiddie menu and it’s either too little food or not the greatest quality. Well this stop now. The Wanderer have looked at how and what children eat and have come up with a menu to suit all ages.

The Wanderer Bar & Kitchen is such a great idea, good food, fresh, locally sourced by independant business, menus to match all ages, good wine menu and great service. All the feedback I have heard regarding this site has been extremely positive. I cannot wait for my chance to get down there and try the Wanderer Burger!

Record Breaking NEC Motorhome & Caravan Show

Now that I’m finally fully rested from the NEC 2017 Motorhome and Caravan Show I can safely say that I had an amazing time. Having looked at the figures coming out of the show it seems that I am not the only one who had a fantastic time.

The 6 day extravaganza was a success on all levels. The NEC, which hosted the show across 11 halls had an astonishing 750 leisure vehicles on display with 101,583 visitors. Which is the highest figures since the show began. The attendance soared higher than ever before. The records were broken on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday with 13,779 attending on the Wednesday. The Wednesday of last year saw 13,779 visit the show. The Friday of the show had a 9.3% increase on the previous years show.

The massive attendance did reflect on the success of the exhibitors who were displaying at the show. The leading manufacturers and dealers have reported a much higher than expected sales number. There was also a really good buzz around the show too. I spent a whole day looking round at all the dealers, manufacturers, accessories stand and everything else I could feast my eyes on.

UK sales Director, Lee Roberts of Lunar Caravans was extremely happy with the experience they had at the show: “This year we revealed our 8ft-wide Alaria caravan range and our new coachbuilt motorhome called Cassini. We were overwhelmed with their retail success.”

Coachman Caravans also reported higher-than-expected sales with Marketing Manager Jackie Shipley commenting: “We are delighted with the results from the Motorhome and Caravan Show 2017, with sales exceeding expectations.”

Operations Director of Raymond James Caravans, Bill Chilver stated: “We’ve had an excellent result. We targeted a marginal growth on last year and it’s been such a good show so we’re well within reach of achieving it for 2017. The general feel of the show has been fantastic all the way through.”

The Caravan and Motorhome Club had a great presence at the show. I spoke to a lot of their guys and found out so much more than I already knew about The Club. They had a great display with live interview and a celebrity Q&A with Matt Allwright. The Club were more than ecstatic with their input. Harvey Alexander, Director of Marketing at the Caravan and Motorhome Club commented: “The Club has had a great week at the Motorhome and Caravan Show. Club Day on Tuesday with Matt Allwright hosting forums for Club members and show visitors was a great success and there has been huge demand for our caravan and motorhome manoeuvring sessions. We also launched a series of ground-breaking member offers, including a fuel discount card. We want to inspire and enable people to have great adventures when they are on holiday and build lasting memories with friends and family.”

The show comes after the NCC released statistics confirming the growth of the UK leisure vehicle and staycation industry. Production of touring caravans was up 13.7% in the first six months of 2017 compared to the same period last year, while motorhome registrations rose by 11.3%. Caravan holiday homes are also steadily increasing, with a 5.6% growth in deliveries to holiday park locations between year start and end of June 2017 compared to 2016. The Motorhome and Caravan Show 2018 will run from 16 to 21 October 2018.

Tourism Tax Bashed On BBC Show

By William Coleman

A short while ago it was announced that a tourism tax was being considered for the Outer Hebrides. As you can imagine this proposal was met with a fair amount of backlash. It seems the backlash is being heard all across the land with a shared disdain for ideas regarding additional taxation on tourists.

In Wales, amongst the tourism community, there are very negative feelings regarding the tourism tax proposal. The owner of a major holiday park group, Thomas Scarrott, feels that this tax idea would be devastating for the Welsh tourism industry.

Mr. Scarrott spoke on the BBC’s Sunday Politics Wales show and explained that the proposal would undo a lot of the hard work done by the Welsh Government to drive an encourage tourism. The statement came during the interview at the Grondre Holiday Park near Narberth in Pembrokeshire, one of the seven holiday parks owned by his family’s Vale Holiday Parks.

This new tax idea is one of four possible new taxes that is being considered by ministers and would lead to tourist who choose Wales as their holiday destination paying more for each night that they at their chosen location.

Mr. Scarrott went on to tell the Sunday Politics Wales reports Carl Roberts that a levy on visitors to Wales would not just affect accommodation providers such as his parks. There would be a damaging knock on effect to many local business such as bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants.

A large amount of the business that would suffer are local family run operations. These smaller business do not have the money and customer base that other juggernaut brands in the UK have. One bad season can sometimes be enough to put the future of these businesses in doubt.

With around £5 billion being funneled into the Welsh economy from overnight stays it really does pose a big financial threat should the population choose to avoid locations with this new taxation.

We are seeing large momentum behind the UK tourism industry at the moment. As I have reported before we are now in a golden age of tourism, these new tax proposals seem like they could certainly hinder the massive progress we are making. This tax law would also affect the tourism numbers from abroad visitors. With the UK being visited more and more by foreign holiday makers, Wales in particular, this could possible make them think twice about using our country as their holiday destination.

Glamping Is Good For Your Health And Here’s Why

By William Coleman

I will find any excuse to go on a last minute excursion and get out and about. Come wind, rain or shine I’m searching for my next staycation getaway. Now I get to use the health benefits glamping provides as the perfect reason to get more time outdoors.

The rise of glamping is far from slowing. The explosion of the new trend which started a few years ago seems to be growing as each year goes by. In 2016 4 in 10 people went glamping or camping. By 2020 it is expected that there will be 21 million trips of this nature taken in the UK. These UK based holidays will boost the economy by a staggering £2.3 billion.

Being out in the great outdoors has a lot of benefits for your mental and physical health. It seems that a lot of people are actually put off by the idea of camping. With camping comes an element of “doing it yourself”, some people get away to not have to erect a tent or build a fire. A lot of holiday makers like the idea of hot water and electric. Maybe camping just does not have much of a glamorous appeal to many.

Well if you are one of these people then glamping is tailor made for you. All the freedom and outdoor exposure of camping but with a huge dose of luxury and comfort. Staying out in the wilds of nature with running water, electric and a good heating system. What’s not to love?

Cleveland Container, who are converting storage units into creative dwellings, are now getting fully involved in the glamping world. Due to the shape and size of storage containers they are the perfect stencil for clamping accommodation.

The best thing about glamping is the fact that is makes nature so much more accessible to people. It has been medically proven that exposure to the great outdoors will improve your health. With fresh clean air and the added exercise of getting out and about it will get your blood pumping and help you de-stress. Glamping is closing the gap between people and the wild. Without the added fears of no creature comforts.

As the amount of locations for glamping grows as does the idea and designs of the accommodation. You can live is total luxury deep in the wilds of Britain. They span from shipping containers, tree house, teepees log cabins and even the high end lodges. Some even have their own private hot tub. No matter what your tastes are you will be certain to find a glamping site that will exceed all expectations.

One you have had a great night’s sleep you can jump up fresh faced and take a nice stroll through the woods to take in all the natural beauty our lands have to offer, some of which really does have to be seen to be believed. Some sites provide entertainment and activities. It doesn’t get much better than doing exercise without realising you’re actually doing it. If you like yoga, mountain biking or water sports like rafting or kayaking you will have more fun than you realise was even possible. Being spoilt for choice is always nice.

Aside from the benefits being active has it also has a huge positive impact on your mood and happiness. When you are more active and your blood starts pumping your body releases a chemical called dopamine. Once your brain lets this out your body experiences a feeling a happiness. You really cannot go wrong with a good glamping site with some outdoor activities, oh and the hot tub, cannot forget the hot tub.

If you are already quite an active person then you may not feel that this additional outdoor time with added exercise is not really going to benefit you that much. Well that may not quite be the case. An hours cardio with a weight workout is very good but it doesn’t have the fresh air the the countryside provides. Along with the endorphins and dopamine pumping through your body it is also proven that breathing fresh air is also extremely good for your health.

So if you are thinking out getting out and about, even if winter is almost upon us, then choose clamping. If it’s very cold outside then being in the wild in a nicely heated luxury glamping lodge sounds like the best way to spend your winter.
