Mega Broadband Speeds For Holiday Park

By William Coleman

There is nothing worse than doing a Broadband speed check on your area to find that the speeds available are so low it would take about a year to open a webpage. Well that has all changed for hundreds of households across south Cumbria thanks to a local holiday park group.

Silverdale park near Arnisde were switch on to ultra fast fibre broadband earlier this month. After digging up over five miles of trenches and road sides snail mail is now a thing of the past for this area.

All this hard work and effort enables the community-led broadband provider B4RN to install junction chamber along the five mile route read for connection to the surrounding properties. This meant that instead of struggling with poor speeds, sometimes less than 1MB, local home could now travel at lightspeed around the web with a monumental 1000 megabits.

On top of that amazing speeds residents are receiving it seems they are also saving money and getting a lot more bang for their buck. The speeds they are getting are much higher than what the most efficient BT line can provide, at a fraction of the cost too.

The Holgates group, owners of Silverdale park, recently completed a similar project at its nearby Silver Ridge park, putting many other householders within reach of supersonic broadband.

Parks owner Michael Holgate said the much greater speed will make a vast improvement to the efficiency of his business – and will be welcomed by holiday guests:

“Like many rural businesses in Cumbria, we rely on the internet to generate sales, communicate with customers, and keep our website up to date,” he said.

“Before, our online computers often managed little better than a glacial crawl – but now we’re really in the fast lane, and get better connectivity than many people in major towns and cities.

“Customers are also delighted, and now they can access amazing download speeds, and use social media to send pictures and even videos of their holiday.

“Digging the ducts for the fibre cables was a mammoth and costly task for us, but we’re thrilled that it could now prove a digital lifeline for many locally-living families,” said Michael.

2016 saw the 60th anniversary of the family owned business and today has six holiday parks in the region which creates around 150 job.

Safety Security And Storage

By William Coleman

As I have said many times, along with most of the world, winter is coming! Recently I have written some articles on winter prep for our touring holiday homes. There is one more important aspect we all need to look at, security. Preparation is something we all dislike but now is the time to think about storing our tour homes as well as how to keep them secure during the cold months.

Unless you have the luxury of living behind a large gated compound or in total seclusion out in the wilds of the UK you will always be at risk of some kind of auto theft crime or vandalism. So how do we, as an industry and community, securely store our beloved touring homes during the off season?

Wheel Locks

This may be the most obvious and clear method to use, but you’d be surprised how many people do not use them. These clamps really are worth their weight in gold. Something so simple will put off any would thief from attempting to lift your home. Despite this it is very common to see a lot of homes stored stationary on a driveway without any kind of wheel lock in place.

Out Of Sight Out Of Mind

Like most things in life, if it can’tbe seen it can’t be an issue. There are many ways in which you can hide your caravan or motorhome. Sometimes to most effective way is to hide in plain sight. A cover can sometimes be the best thing to hide your home. A lot of people seem to think that if someone can see something covered up it makes them more curious, I disagree entirely. If you see something that looks like a caravan covered by something that is also the same shape as a caravan it’s more than likely going to be exactly that, a caravan. People will pass by and just see a caravan shape covered up. If someone wants to take one I don’t think they want to fuss of taking the cover off to reveal a home that has sat there under a covered for 10 years and is worth less the shirt on their back.

If you have access to your back garden or a good size garage that is the ideal hiding space. Always remember that if you have a cover a thief will not want to take too much time removing the cover or steal something that they cannot do anything with. Plus the cost of a cover far outweighs the cost of not having one.

Window and Door Locks

During the off season a lot of things are stored in caravans and motorhomes. Things that can be used by others which mean they can be sold on. Most good quality homes do come with good factory standard locks on all the windows and doors. That being said there is never any harm in investing in some extra locks for doors and windows. If you have already done this then keep up the maintenance on these locks to ensure they are as good as they were when you took them out of the package.

Alarms and Cameras

During my college days I went on a few caravan holidays with a friend and his family to the south of France. The security measures my friend’s father took seemed, at the time, a tad extreme. Exterior cameras watching the drive where the caravan was kept, interior alarm system with supporting cameras, GPS trackers and then the goold old fashioned wheel locks. I struggled to see how he’d even manage to get in himself. Years on after seeing how expensive his caravan was and how common theft of touring homes are it all made sense.

Never shy away from an alarm due to its price. With alarms you get what you pay for. If you have budgeted for a motorhome or caravan you should always add a little bit more for the after purchase essentials like alarm systems.

A motorhome, being part car/van, usually has an alarm in the cab. This does not always extend to the rear doors. So always check when purchasing what factory standard security the home as. When you go to store the home you can’t put a price on peace of mind.

Add the deposit offer to the 2018 ranges that will be on display and this makes Coachman a must visit stand this year. But do not just take my word for it. Go and see for yourself. This year Coachman will be at stand 19.39

JEEP Named Official Tow Car For NEC Show

By William Coleman

The JEEP is synonymous with outdoor living. From Hollywood movies to the countryside of the UK you will see JEEPs of all ages dotted around these setting. This has been recognised by the NCC who have named the JEEP as the official tow car of the 2017 Motorhome and Caravan Show.

JEEP will also be displaying their 4×4 ranges at the show. You will get a chance to see award-winning vehicles: Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Renegade and Wrangler. These vehicles are not just the ideal ‘Go anywhere, Do anything’ automotive solution, they also make for a great tow car.

The Grand Cherokee’s 247bhp 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine and 3500kg towing capacity is more than enough to cope with a wide variety of caravans, as this Motorhome & Caravan Show event will prove. Specially trained tutors will demonstrate how to get the most out of the vehicle, whether the guests are newcomers or experienced tourers.

Following our coverage of the 2018 Caravan and Motorhome Club Tow Car Award where we said that the awards give great to those who cannot just turn up to a dealer with a caravan to test a vehicle’s towing ability they can come and do it here.

We have towed with JEEP before. Check out our video where we partnered with Swift to tow their base camp the length of the country using the JEEP Renegade.

In the first part of this Basecamp series of videos, Neil Greentree and his son take Swift’s Basecamp caravan up to the heart of the Scottish wilderness to test how it can adapt to harsh winter conditions while accommodating holidaymakers who enjoy outdoor sports.

In the second part of our Basecamp challenge, Neil Greentree, his son Ben and of course the Swift Basecamp catch up with the crew in the Scottish wilderness.

Should Tow Training Be Compulsory And If So When

By William Coleman

There have been an increasing amount of accidents in Australia and New Zealand involving caravans that are being towed. Reports from New Zealand say that at least 80% of caravan crashes could have been avoided had proper training been implemented. In the past 12-18 months the UK leisure and tourism industry has seen a huge boom. As the numbers grow so do the purchasing of caravans. So should new caravan owners have to take towing courses?

In our opinion the “blanket” answer is no, unless we look our ridiculous driving license and test procedures. We have been on towing courses we think they are fantastic and can help with confidence as much as practical skill and we would highly recommend them but creating more barriers to make it difficult enjoy caravanning or motorhoming is wrong and could have a big negative impact on the industry.

That being said, if the driving test was to include a towing element for all, given everyone is allowed to tow up to 3500KG combined weight then to include this in the test that everyone sits then we would back that whole heartedly. It would also show people who take the towing course how easy towing is. It may also add empathy to every driver who give caravans or motorhomes little to no space or respect on the road. Ask anyone who can tow or drives a big motorhome if they think their driving has improved?

There are a lot of first time buyers entering the world of caravaning. And with this comes a wealth of driving experiences for the newcomers? Driving and towing are two completely different things as should be approached as such. If you can drive car or a large van then you can appreciate the different methods used to operate each vehicle.

Having been at the 2018 Caravan & Motorhome Club Tow Car of Year awards I have seen first hand how much effort goes into towing, from an industry perspective. I always had a knowledge of what was needed but once you get an inside look into what goes into safe towing it does give you a new appreciation for safety and respect that drivers who are towing should get from other drivers.

At one point I am sure we have all towed a caravan without some kind of DVLA involvement. But as the numbers rise will it be a benefit to ensure the safety of towers and and everyone else that uses the roads. Or is self taught enough for the open road?
