Self inflating camper up for Australian design award

by Tom Leaning

OPUS Camper has won a Good Design Selection for its AIR OPUS self-inflating camper in Australia’s internationally coveted Good Design Awards.

Good Design Australia announced its selection this week in Australia’s most prestigious design awards.

AIR OPUS competes in the Automotive and Transport category with design icons such as the Tesla Model X.

Selected by an international Jury of design experts, it is now in the running for the Australian Good Design Award, to be announced in June.

The Jury said AIR OPUS offered “genuine innovation at a surprisingly affordable price” and was “incredibly spacious with well thought out, easy to use and functional spaces”.

But its highest praise was for the air beams that inflate the camper in just two minutes.

“The convenience of pushing a button to erect the camper with air is simply genius and makes camping accessible to everyone,” the Jury said.

Good Design Australia CEO and Chair of the Good Design Awards program, Dr Brandon Gien, said the awards attracted entries from all corners of the world.

“This year’s Good Design Selections represent excellence in design across the widest spectrum of design,” he said.

“Good design is about making our lives better, safer and happier. It extends to everything around
us.”

AIR OPUS converts from a compact trailer into a luxury six-berth camper in less than two minutes at the press of a button, with air beam technology replacing traditional poles.

OPUS Camper director Jonathan Harrison said the Good Design Selection was a credit to the British and Australian design teams who had created the AIR OPUS.

We are proud to be included in a field which includes such global design leaders as Tesla, Audi and Bombardier Recreational Products,” he said.

Customer service team at Devon campsite bring home the gold

by Tom Leaning

Staff at a multi-award winning Devon camping park have now scooped their own accolade – and it’s been presented to them for outstanding customer service.

The team at Beverley Holidays in Paignton took the top gold spot in the Excellence In Customer Service category of the Herald Express South Devon Business Awards 2017.

Overcoming tough competition from a record number of entries, Beverley’s team was congratulated at the sparkling award finals at the Riviera International Conference Centre.

Judges commended the park’s commitment to continually improving customer service via a comprehensive customer care policy and company-wide service training initiative.

Director of Beverley Holidays, Nicola Furneaux, said the award gave thoroughly deserved recognition to the park’s loyal and hard-working staff:

“Providing our guests with exceptional levels of customer service coupled with high-quality holiday accommodation is at the heart of Beverley Holidays’ ethos,” she said.

“All our team members are enrolled in a carefully structured customer service training scheme called ‘The Beverley Road To Excellence’ which encourages personal development.

“It benefits both our guests, and the staff themselves by equipping them with new skills to help drive their careers forward.

“We have also invested heavily in our accommodation and facilities in 2017 to ensure we offer the best possible holiday experience,” added Nicola.

Almost a million pounds has this year been spent on a fleet of state-of-the-art fleet of “glaravans” at Beverley, many with their very own private bubbling hot tubs.

The park’s Jetty Lounge, Bar & Terrace was treated to a six-figure makeover, transforming it into a stylish new space for eating, drinking and relaxation with panoramic sea views.

Beverley’s reception area also received to a revamp courtesy of local design agency Fruition, and a new entertainment programme will welcome a galaxy of screen and stage stars this season.

Guests can now also vote via postcards for their own “customer service superstar” by highlighting team members who go the extra mile to make their stay more memorable.

CaravanTimes believes excellent customer service at caravan, motorhome and camping sites are one of the major factors why guests keep coming back every year. So well done to all the staff at Beverley Holidays in Devon, and carry on making customer service a priority at your campsite.

Wood Leisure splashes out on green energy pool for its campers

by Tom Leaning

Camping guests taking the plunge at a top-rated camping park near Stirling, run by Wood Leisure, will now be swimming in some of Scotland’s most environmentally-friendly waters.

Campsie Glen Holiday Park in the village of Fintry, which welcomes touring caravans and motorhomes as well as offering spacious lodges and holiday homes to rent, has just completed an £80,000 makeover of its outdoor pool which is heated entirely by green energy.

Both the main pool and newly added adjacent baby pool maintain their blissful temperatures with the latest air source heating technology.

The system extracts heat from the outside air even in temperatures close to freezing, and ensures that Campsie’s pool leaves virtually no carbon footprint.

It’s the latest in a raft of forward-looking measures taken at the park to minimise its impact on the environment, and to safeguard its flora and fauna.

Other initiatives include a biomass heating system, the use of non-polluting cleaning products, extensive recycling, and the creation of wildlife habitats throughout the grounds.

Meanwhile, Campsie’s pool now starts the 2017 season with a top-to-toe upgrade including a weatherproof enclosure, changing rooms, and new toilet and shower facilities.

It’s a hugely popular feature at the park which is one of five Scottish holiday parks owned by the Wood family who first set up in business over 35 years ago.

Campsie Glen, previously called Balgair Castle, was acquired by Colin and Margaret Wood in 2010, and since then the family has invested much time and energy creating a first-class holiday environment.

Their reward has been to see a year-on-year increase in visitor numbers, a four-star quality grading from VisitScotland, and many glowing online reviews from customers.

Nestled in 27 acres of tranquil countryside, Campsie provides caravan holiday homes for sale and for hire, camping pods, and pitches for tents, touring caravans and motorhomes.

There are also residential park homes to buy which can be lived in permanently.

Wood Leisure’s operations manager Bruce Thomson said the new-look pool at Campsie is already receiving the thumbs-up from holidaymakers:

“The addition of a baby pool has been especially welcomed by families, and the new enclosure means the facility is now much more weather resistant,” he said.

“Our policy has always been to run our parks along sustainable lines, and we’re proud that the heating of the pool is being achieved in an eco-friendly way.

“Campsie has always had a special appeal to people who care about the environment and enjoy coming closer to nature in these wonderful surroundings,” added Bruce.

Red squirrels make a surprise comeback at Cumbrian caravan park

by Tom Leaning

Multiple sightings of red squirrels at Cumbria’s Skelwith Fold caravan park this spring are causing excitement among holidaymakers – and especially youngsters.

The wildlife-friendly Ambleside park says the red revival is evidence of the success of its 12-year conservation programme to encourage the animals’ return.

Now guests at Skelwith Fold are reporting regular appearances of the red squirrel colonies which are beginning to thrive in the 130 acre grounds of the park.

For children especially, says director Henry Wild, it’s a magical chance to see – possibly for the first time ever – Britain’s best-loved and most iconic woodland creature.

But tempting the elusive reds back has required a concerted effort by the park and its staff over a period of more than a decade.

It required a reduction in the number of grey squirrels through humane culling, and a woodland management scheme to ensure that the natural environment remained red-friendly.

A near setback to the park’s plans came near the start when a virus, deadly to red squirrels, was known to be spreading through parts of the UK.

Skelwith Fold established that the parapox virus, as it is called, was suspected of being passed via the feeders often used to bolster the diet of red squirrels.

The park quickly moved on to ground feeding and alternative methods of delivering the food to the animals – and as a result, the grounds have remained completely virus-free.

According to Henry Wild, Skelwith Fold is also thankfully free of another major threat to red squirrels – the domestic cat, and its total disregard for whether its dinner is endangered or not.

Six years ago, after the first reds were spotted, The Prince of Wales wrote to Skelwith Fold congratulating the park “most strongly” on its “efforts to preserve this wonderful creature”.

Prince Charles also gave details of the park’s achievements to the Red Squirrel Survival Trust, of which he is the patron, and it has now published Skelwith’s success strategy nationwide.

“It’s involved a lot of hard work on the part of our own conservation team at Skelwith Fold, but this year’s many sightings have made everything worthwhile,” said Henry.

“The possible return of the reds is something we’ve all dreamt of for a long time, and now it’s become a reality thanks to the determination of everybody here.

“Our guests have also felt the buzz, and many have reported capturing their sighting on camera – and we’re now compiling, where possible, a library of their films and photos.

“It’s fantastic to know that our reds are helping to create some amazing lifetime memories for youngsters who have only ever heard about these lovely animals,” added Henry.

Skelwith Fold’s commitment to the natural world has earned it a number of important environmental accolades, including the David Bellamy Conservation Award at its top gold level.

Meanwhile, video footage of this spring’s red squirrel activity at the park can be seen on Skelwith Fold’s Facebook page which can be accessed via its website at www.skelwith.com

Top Tips: Useful space solutions for caravans

by David Murphy Towing

Do you love caravanning but are always wishing you had more living space to work with? Well, the lovely people at David Murphy Towing, a family-owned towing supplier based in Northern Ireland, have written an exclusive article for CaravanTimes providing useful tips and tricks to make your caravan interior feel as spacious as possible.

A caravan is a modern-day home away from home, so it can be tempting to fill it with everything you have back at home.

The reality is that it’s a smaller space, and though you want your comforts you also want your caravan to be a serene space to relax and enjoy your leisurely time away from the daily grind.

David Murphy Towing have seen a lot of cool caravans in their 30 years while fitting towbars for UK caravan enthusiasts and they’ve picked up a lot of tips for making even the smallest spaces pack a punch inside.

They’ve found to get the most out of your compact holiday home it’s important to focus on the two areas that will instantly improve the space: decoration and declutter.

The first involves what you do with the space itself – how you decorate it, how you lay it out (if you have the option) and how you plan to use the space once there is a person/multiple people inside it will have a big impact on how big or small the space feels.

The second is about maximising the storage space, so that you remove as much clutter as possible from the existing space, leaving it feeling spacious and comfortable. We’ve listed the top tips for those caravanning solutions later on!

Making a small space look bigger

When it comes to simply making a space look bigger than it is, much of it is about optical illusion. The tricks we would use with interior design in a small room in our homes can be easily applied to our caravans, too. The most common (and least expensive) tricks of the decorating trade include:

Mirrors – a great way to not only give the illusion of more space (through reflection) but to also brighten the space, particularly if all the windows are located on one side of the caravan, as they so often are. Even if you don’t have the wall space, mirrored tiles in spaces such as kitchen sink splash backs or shower interiors are another good way to bring this into your space. By reducing dark corners, light-filled rooms automatically appear bigger.

Furnishing – when it comes to decorating your space with wallpapers or soft furnishings, keep in mind that less fuss equals more space. Patterns or multiple colours can shrink a space and darker colours absorb more light, so minimal effects and paler colours are a really good choice for caravan interiors. Likewise, rugs and cushions may all help to make you feel more cosy or at home your caravan, but they will also take up more room, so removing any unnecessary decorations like this will make a difference to how spacious your living space feels.

Furniture – if you intend to bring anymore furniture into the caravan that comes with the existing design, remember to scale it for the space. A coffee table for a full-sized living room for example will look oversized in a caravan lounge area. A smaller version of the same item will not only make the space feel bigger, but it will be easier to store away for travelling.

Now we look at the all-important declutter exercise. Why? Well a cluttered room can instantly look half its real size. And when it comes to caravans, clutter is often not the result of “having too much stuff” but rather it’s about trying to fit full-sized household items into a smaller space, or not fully utilising the storage space that exists to your full advantage.

Invest in collapsable products Many caravans utilise this technology in their in-built design because it is such a clever way to ensure duality of space. You’ll see it in dining areas that become beds or beds that fold away into wall and ceiling space.

There are many more items available in this genre though, and it may mean investing in more items, rather than bringing your existing ones from home, but you will see the benefits. Table-top ironing boards, fold-away laundry baskets and clothes horses are all examples of these inexpensive space-saving solutions.

You can also make some items collapsable in the sense that they “shrink” when storing by vacuum-packing things like clothes, towels and outdoor equipment such as wet suits. This helps them to fit in tighter storage spaces such as under-bed drawers.

Double up on space purpose

This is sometimes the most efficient and cost-effective way to make a caravan interior feel immediately more spacious. It simply takes some imagination and ingenuity. Sticky-back hooks, suction caps or clips are all storage accessories that will instantly give your cupboard space two jobs instead of just one – allowing for the hanging of utensils and door keys on top of what is sore inside the cupboard itself. Not to mention it will save oodles of time spent searching for lost items when everything has a place!

Hanging shoe racks are another common storage solution that are perfect for caravans because the backs of doors in rooms are rarely seen and yet a netted bag with multiple pockets, or a net hammock will take shoes, bathroom products or towels off the floor or shelves and clear those spaces immediately, and with little effort.

Look for nesting products

Nesting bowls and spoons are often associated with baby’s first dinner set or baking accessories, however if you look out for them you’ll see they’re becoming increasingly popular. In the outdoor and picnic areas of shops you will now find a vast array of bowls, cutlery, cups and glasses, all made of more durable materials and which helpfully fold away together in a space-saving way.

These items will then free up more of the space inside your caravan kitchen cupboards, leaving precious work top and table areas free from clutter and therefore feeling more spacious.

Divide and conquer

Drawer dividers and storage baskets are usually reserved for bedrooms at home, however they are a great space-saver in your caravan drawers and cupboards, too. Not only do they ensure you get the most out of your space – by being able to pile items into baskets behind a door without risk of them falling out when you open it, for example – these storage supplies will also protect your items in transit, particularly breakables such as glasses, by keeping them a certain distance apart even while driving.

If you have a particularly deep cupboard in the kitchen or elsewhere, its a good idea to look for ways to divide the space, freeing up more storage room. Visiting kitchen supply stores and design showrooms can offer you the ability to purchase some accessories that are normally sold with kitchen units, such as pull-out cupboard organisers. Often, as long as you measure the dimensions to ensure it will fit, you can easily attach these yourself using the runners that come with them.

Don’t forget about the ceiling

The top space of a caravan is arguably the most under-utilised. We can blame gravity of course,
but there are ways around this!

Hooks and magnetic strips can be attached so that thin items – even big ones – such as brooms can be held safely out of the way above heads, without impinging on the space below. Similarly, you can purchase collapsable storage bags that are longer than they are deep, which can be hung from ceiling hooks to store flat bed sheets, towels and even clothing.

Buy an annex

OK, this might seem like cheating because it doesn’t add space to the existing caravan interior. But it is a long-standing caravan and camping accessory for very good reason – caravan annexes will instantly add another room to your space, mixing the indoors with the outdoors, while protecting you from the weather elements.

With all that said, it’s clear that you really don’t have to work too hard – or spend too much – to get the most out of your home-from- home. A few clever accessories here and there, coupled with some clever optical trickery with your interior design and you can feel like the King of your Caravanning Castle!

NCC: Motorhome registrations continue to climb

by Tom Leaning

The UK motorhome market continues to boom, according to new figures released by the National Caravan Council (NCC). The total number of new registrations in March 2017 was up by nearly a quarter during the past year.

The statistics show that registrations of new motorhomes in March 2017 reached 2,877, a 22.3 per cent increase over last year, taking them to their highest ever level for the first quarter at 3,670. March, with its number plate change, is a popular month for consumers to buy, ahead of the spring and summer season.

The latest figures reveal that between April 2016 and March 2017, nearly 13,000 motorhomes were registered, compared with 11,000 in the 12 months to March 2016.

Commenting on the latest figures, John Lally, the NCC’s Director General, said: “The motorhome industry is working hard to provide customers with what they want – innovative and stylish products at great prices. Allied to the investments being made by UK park operators in new facilities, the future continues to look bright for motorhomes and their owners.”

New HMRC rules give tax relief to motorhomes for disabled customers

by Tom Leaning

The NCC, the trade body representing the UK’s leisure vehicle industry, has welcomed new HMRC rules on VAT relief available on motorhomes (and other motor vehicles) adapted for disabled wheelchair users, which came into force this month.

The NCC’s Deputy Director General, Alicia Dunne, explains why this is good for both motorhome dealers and for disabled customers.

She said: “While motorhomes have been available at a reduced VAT rate for a number of years, some dealers were uncertain about when they were able to supply a vehicle at zero-rate VAT.

“The new HMRC rules on VAT relief clearly state that it must be a ‘substantial and permanent adaptation’ to be eligible to be zero-rated, and the vehicle must be supplied to a disabled person who normally uses a wheelchair for their mobility. A disabled person with a degenerative condition such as multiple sclerosis, who uses a wheelchair when their condition requires it, or a lower limb amputee is also eligible.

“The motorhome industry welcomes the clarification, and there are newly-introduced mandatory HMRC eligibility declaration forms the customer needs to fill in. Through these, a disabled person, or their nominated representative, can claim zero-rated relief on their motorhome purchase.

“Motorhomes are often converted by smaller, specialist companies and some are able to supply a vehicle highly customised to an individual user’s needs. The inclusion of such aids as a permanently fitted ramp or lift to allow access, reconfiguring of the lay-out to create room for a wheelchair, hoists and specialised bathrooms and toilets are all possible within a motorhome.

“Most importantly, motorhomes can facilitate stress-free holidays and a greater degree of freedom for the wheelchair user.”

Report: Glamping may offer solution to young families struggling to maintain a work life balance

by Tom Leaning

Young families are finding it ever-more difficult to spend time together, and achieve a satisfactory work-life balance, with more than one in four parents concerned that they don’t set aside enough time at weekends to play as a family, according to a new report.

The findings of a UK study* of 2000 adults with young children aged up to 14 revealed that difficulties balancing work and family life can put a significant amount of stress on a family.

42 per cent of adults confessed to checking work emails at weekends when they should be spending time with family. 49 per cent spend time catching up with work or preparing for work tasks.

However, the problem facing many modern UK families is a shortage of quality time together. With daily life lived at such a frantic pace, families find it difficult to make regular time for each other.

In the survey, commissioned by Ready Camp, official glamping operator of The Camping and Caravanning Club, respondents felt regular holidays were an important way of freeing up time to spend as a family, and helping carve out the space to create unforgettable experiences together. Nearly one in two families would like to take more short weekend family breaks.

And of those that do manage to free up time to spend together, more than half focus on doing activities near home, because 39 per cent are worried about the expense of a family holiday.

Weekend glamping escapes could be the key – an affordable solution to getting children outdoors more, and to ensuring families spend quality time together. 42 per cent of respondents said they’d never been glamping before, but would like to.

Research has previously shown that families who spend quality time together are able to communicate with each other better*. And investing in this time benefits the family as a whole, as well as each individual member.

Ready Camp ambassador Katy Hill, current Heart FM radio presenter and celebrity parent blogger, and former Blue Peter TV presenter, said:

“Raising children is, for me, one of life’s most fulfilling experiences. But families are busier than ever, juggling home and work life, and finding opportunities to spend quality time with loved ones is at a premium. For me, regularly switching off from work and committing fully to family life, is a must and an absolute joy.”

Katy, a mum to two children aged 10 and 7, said: “Glamping in the great outdoors is a fabulous, no-hassle way to take a break from the pressures of modern life with the ones you love most. They are a brilliant way to re-establish bonds and lay down unforgettable family memories. I love these breaks.”

Glamping with Ready Camp makes the prospect of an escape in a tent, away from home comforts such as your own bed, a little less daunting. There’s no need to pack your life into the boot for a few days away – the tent is pitched and ready for you, so you can concentrate on having fun!

The Camping and Caravanning Club’s Ready Camp network of glamping tents, launched in 2015, has expanded with a further 9 new sites in 2017 to total 39 sites across Britain, close to many of Britain’s best-loved tourist spots.

Each offers comfortable and hassle-free camping to people keen to camp without having to hitch up a caravan or pitch their own tent – all visitors need to bring is your own bedding, towels and a sense of adventure.

Washrooms are available on all Camping and Caravanning Club Sites, where holidaymakers are guaranteed immaculate facilities.

Since launch, Ready Camp has been recognised at several industry awards, including in summer 2016, when it was shortlisted in the Best UK Accommodation – Group category at the 2016 Family Traveller Awards.

Caravelair release the family friendly Antares 476

by Tom Leaning

The Caravelair Antares 476 is now on the market just in time for a long, hot summer of outdoor fun, and once the kids’ school term draws to an end, the 476 is ideal to use as a family headquarters while you and your young ones enjoy a well-earned break.

While the cuddly bear is unfortunately not included, the bunkbeds at the rear offer a perfect bedding area for two young scallywags, while the adults can enjoy the double bed at the front.

That leaves the seating and kitchen area situated in the middle of the caravan and the electrical Thetford cassette toilet to the right of the double bed. A fifth family member or friend can comfortably sleep in the converted seating area, but anymore than that will probably be uncomfortable for all involved.

So, if the Easter bunny kindly left you £14,295 in cash during the night, this latest beauty from Caravelair is yours.

PS – We predict it’s going to be a scorcher this summer, so make sure to pack the factor 30!

Swift Group doubles up at annual Made in Yorkshire Awards

by Tom Leaning

Swift Group has been recognised at the prestigious Made in Yorkshire awards winning the ‘Manufacturer of the Year (over £25m)’ and the ‘Manufacturing Apprenticeship/Training Scheme’ awards.

Held at the Royal Armouries Hall, Leeds, the awards showcase the talent and skills that Yorkshire manufacturers have in abundance. Established to celebrate success, the awards are designed to reward the innovation and technological expertise of manufacturing companies in the region. A total of 40 companies were in contention to win an award last night, with the most ambitious and innovative recognised.

Represented by a team of employees from across the business, Swift Group was delighted to receive both awards with a thrilled Amy Archer, Deputy Managing Director commenting ‘this is a fantastic achievement and thanks goes to everyone at our different sites whose hard work and commitment made this possible. The business continues to enjoy significant growth under-pinned by ongoing investment in people and facilities, along with our focus on innovation, build quality, stylish design, and customer care that delivers outstanding value for money for our customers.’

First to be awarded was the Manufacturing Apprenticeship/Training Scheme Award. The entry criteria stated; “For the employer’s apprenticeship scheme that the judges decide is the most beneficial, taking into account relevance and thoroughness of training, contribution to the business, benefit to apprentices and contribution to added value generated in their region.” This is a huge accolade for Swift Group who only launched the Swift Academy in 2015.

The big award of the evening was for Manufacturer of the Year (over £25m) with Swift Group crowned the winners despite tough competition from other well-known companies. The judges commented; “Swift Group takes the honours after a continually excellent financial performance which has seen the business increase sales by 25 per cent and retain its status as the UK’s number one manufacturer of leisure vehicles”.

The recognition means that Swift Group goes on to the Made in the UK Awards where winners from each regional category go on to compete against those from other regions across Britain.
