Mid Wales caravan parks make awards clean sweep

by Ed Davies

Mid-Wales caravan parks have swept up a whole raft of five star awards following a year of multi-million pound investment in infrastructure and development

Visit Wales have handed out 33 five star gradings, with thirteen of the parks in Powys, 11 in Meirionnydd or South Gwynedd, eight in Ceredigion and one in Carmarthenshire.

The host of five star ratings drew praise from various sectors including Welsh cabinet secretary for economy and infrastructure Ken Skates.

Mr Skates said: “We need high standard facilities in Wales in order to attract visitors to Wales and entice them back time and again.

“With their five star ratings, the quality of the caravan parks in Mid Wales can compete with anywhere in the UK.

“Our figures indicate that 2016 has been another great year for tourism in Wales, following two record breaking years.”

There has been a growth of 15% in international tourism visits during the first six months of 2016 and occupancy levels have been maintained or increased across most sectors.

He added: “Some 85% of businesses reported that they are confident about this year. We now look forward to working with the industry on the Year of Legends in 2017.”

Swift awarded for youth work

by Ed Davies

Swift Group has won Hull’s Youth Enterprise award for its efforts in inspiring youngsters with the entrepreneurial bug and encouraging them to develop key skills

The award recognises the investment that Swift Group has made in partnerships with local schools and colleges to support young people in developing core skills.

The award was also given to Swift as it operates one of the largest manufacturing apprenticeship schemes in the region and is a key player in attempting to increase the number of women in engineering.

Swift Group also provides alternative routes of employment for young people including an engineering scholarship programme.

The fully funded programme is open to students with A levels or equivalent qualifications and enables them to study part-time for an engineering degree whilst working at Swift.

“I would like to congratulate all the winners” said a delighted Amy Archer, deputy managing director. “Supporting our local community and in particular helping young people succeed in the world of work, is a key commitment of Swift Group.

“Many of the Swift team have worked extremely hard with a number of local education providers and it is great to see that effort rewarded, well done everyone.”

An in-depth look at the Caravelair Antares 335

by Ed Davies

The Caravelair Antares 335 is being released to the British market for 2017 and is expected to be one of the big movers and shakers in the caravan industry this year

Having been manufactured by French leisure industry giants Trigano, the new 335 comes with all mod-cons in a cosy two-berth and has a grade III classification for heating and thermal insulation.

This means every model in this compact line up excels in any environment to deliver luxurious year round touring comfort.

The classification was achieved after completing rigorous testing inside a state of the art cold chamber facility in Derby, where the caravan was subjected to extreme temperatures of -15°C.

In order to achieve Grade III status, the centre of the interior must achieve a minimum temperature of +20°C within a 4 hour period despite the freezing temperatures surrounding the vehicle throughout the test.

On top of this feature, the compact 335 would be perfect for couples and comes with ambient LED lighting and three burner hob with oven/grill.

It has fully equipped bathrooms, alloy wheels, exterior locker access and more efficient stabilisers for safer towing.

The living room seating area can be converted in an instant to a double bed, with the toilet and kitchen located at the back.

Its maximum gross weight is only 900 kg, which may reduce down to 750 kg and has an empty weight of 655 kg.

Behind the scenes look at Elddis caravan design

In the video we see those who are pushing forward the Elddis brand and how they spend their time on developing new ideas and improving their vehicles.

The production team at Elddis were excited to tell us how they are for the first time launching 8ft wide models in the Elddis Avante and Compass Casita ranges.

There were also developments in the Buccaneer range, which sees a new family camper added to the set, which had previously primarily focused only on couples.

The video shows how attentive Elddis are to meeting the concerns of their users and how they are willing and able to adapt to suit their needs.

However, do not take our word for it and watch our latest Elddis video provided.

Appeal to trace owner of dumped caravan in Essex

by Ed Davies

An appeal has been launched to trace the owner of a caravan dumped on Holland Marshes

The caravan has been collected by Tendring District Council (TDC) and is being stored until Friday. If it has not been collected it will be disposed of.

TDC has received some information about a possible owner, but not enough to take any action. It has a registration of E202 YHJ and was dumped over the weekend of November 5/6.

Michael Talbot, TDC’s cabinet member for environment, said: “If we discover who is responsible we will take action as the cost of removal and disposal will come out of the public purse. I would urge anyone who knows who the caravan belongs to, to get in touch.”

Anyone with information should call 01255 686770.

Hopes for national roll-out of Caravan Park Watch

by Ed Davies

There are hopes that Lincolnshire’s innovative Caravan Park Watch scheme may be rolled out nationally

The scheme was launched in 2014 when Inspector Andy Morrice was the local inspector for the coastal area.

The Lincolnshire coast has one of the highest concentrations of caravans in Europe and Inspector Morrice got together with caravan park owners and representatives from the caravan manufacture and insurance industries to discuss ways to help reduce the number of burglaries that occur each year, especially during the closed winter season.

The Caravan Park Watch scheme was rapidly adopted by holiday parks along the coast and saw the introduction of new park policies such as the compulsory removal of televisions and valuables when caravans are ‘closed down’ for the winter.

Information Sharing Agreements were also introduced which allowed police to share information about known caravan burglars with scheme members, aiding site security staff and further helping to reduce crime.

Inspector Morrice said: “I was delighted to accept the National Caravan Council’s invitation to attend the exhibition and to talk about the success of the scheme.

“There was a great deal of positive interest in how similar partnerships can be adopted as best practice across the country, helping to reduce caravan crime on a national level.”

Great autumn buzz for Devon family’s seaside park

by Ed Davies

Ladram Bay Holiday Park in Budleigh Salterton is flying high after a hat-trick of awards this autumn, including an honour from botanist David Bellamy for its honey bee friendly policies

The triple triumphs for the park began at the start of November when it was named as the Devon, Somerset and Dorset winner of the Hoseasons “family fun” award.

The major holiday bookings agency announced Ladram Bay’s accolade at its annual conference in Birmingham, based on parks which produce the highest customer satisfaction rating.

It was the sixth year in succession that the Carter family, owners of the park for over 70 years, has been celebrated in the finals of the event.

Ladram Bay next stepped into the spotlight at November’s finals of the Devon Tourism Awards, held at a glittering ceremony at the Great Hall at the University of Exeter.

It was declared by judges to be among the top three holiday parks in the county, and family members stepped up to receive the bronze honour in its category.

The park’s environmental policies were marked in the third of the accolades it received this month: the David Bellamy Conservation Award.

Given to parks making exceptional efforts to protect and enhance the natural world, the award was made to Ladram Bay at the top gold level for the third year running.

Professor Bellamy also designated Ladram Bay as an official “Honey Bee Friendly” park as part of his new initiative to help protect the threatened insects.

He praised the park’s extensive areas of high nectar-bearing flowers which provide vital foraging resources for both honey bees and common and less familiar butterflies.

Also highlighted in David Bellamy’s wildlife audit was Ladram Bay’s widespread planting of native trees, and the siting of nesting boxes for bats and owls, as well as bird-feeding stations.

Ladram Bay first began welcoming camping guests in the 1940s, and has since grown to become one of Devon’s most popular holiday parks attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year.

It provides a raft of attractions as well as holiday homes to rent or own, brand new glamping pods, and pitches for touring caravans, motorhomes and tents.

Director and family member Zoe House said the three awards provided a great conclusion to what has been a busy and successful year for the park:

“It’s been a fantastic twelve months for us at Ladram Bay, and our hard-working team members here have all gone the extra mile on our customers’ behalf,” she said.

“It’s therefore very appropriate that their efforts should be recognised in all of these three highly regarded awards which the park has received over the past few weeks.

“Our staff play an invaluable part in maintaining the high quality standards of customer care and hospitality which have led to our two tourism awards.

“They also have a vital role in helping implement the various sustainability policies we have in place, and which led to David Bellamy’s gold conservation award,” added Zoe.

Ladram Bay’s general manager Claire Williams said the park would continue investing in its customer facilities:

“We’ve had a great reaction to our most recent developments which include a new swimming pool complex and a Jurassic-themed adventure golf course,” she said.

“But we are always looking for additional new ways to improve the customer experience, especially for the many families with children who are our core market.

“Bookings for next year are already looking very buoyant, so we are all cautiously optimistic about bringing even more visitors to this glorious region on 2017,” added Claire.

Gold award for caravan park funny man

by Ed Davies

It is awards season and the south west is at it again but this time it is the Devon Tourism Awards shelling out all the honours

Beverly Holidays’ man Drew Baker was given the gold award in the Unsung Hero For Customer Service category of the awards.

He beat 75 other finalists to the prestigious title and the accolade recognises Drew’s achievements in ensuring that Beverley’s guests enjoy outstanding levels of personal service and hospitality.

Drew stepped up to receive his honour at the glittering finals of the Devon Tourism Awards which were held this autumn at the Great Hall at the University of Exeter.

Mr Baker said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have received this title. Customer service is an area for which I feel a real passion and which is at the heart of everything we do here at Beverley Holidays.

“My aim, and that of all our hard-working team members, is to ensure that holidaymakers enjoy a great experience from start to finish – and leave not as guests, but as friends.”

The customer service superstar’s award followed hot on the heels of his recent success in the Herald Express English Riviera and South Devon Tourism and Hospitality Awards 2016.

Drew, a popular figure among holidaymakers at the multi-award winning park, came away from that ceremony with a sparkling silver award for his skills.

Legion d`Honneur for Camping and Caravanning Club member

by Ed Davies

A Camping and Caravanning Club member has been honoured with a Legion d’Honneur by the French government for his military service while liberating France during World War Two

Aged just 98-years-old, Jim Pass, from Bradway in Sheffield, was awarded a Chevalier Légion d’honneur at Yorkshire Air Museum in Elvington near York on Sunday November 13.

Mr Pass, who is also a lifelong caravanner and member of The Camping and Caravanning Club, was presented with his medal by the French Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

He said: “In my 14 years as Chairman of the Club’s Communications Committee I spent lots of time recruiting new club members at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre.

“I have so many great memories of my time with the Club.”

On average, just ten British nationals receive the medal each year.

The Légion d’honneur is the most esteemed order for servicemen and women who fought to protect France in times of war.

Speaking about his wartime exploits, his wife Rita who attended the ceremony with Jim, said: “I feel very proud that Jim has been recognised in this way. He served over seven years during and shortly after the war.

“On D-Day he was on Sword Beach unloading ammunition. I’m proud his actions have been recognised.”

Awarded by the French Government, the latest medals have been presented in recognition of those who helped to win France’s liberation from the Nazis during the course of the Second World War.

Upon returning home, Jim took up more leisurely pursuits and became an active member of The Camping and Caravanning Club.

Jim sat on the Club’s National Council – effectively its board of governors – plus various committees and has enjoyed decades of happy caravanning.

Well known within the Club for his spirit of adventure, in 1988 Jim camped for the first time in a tent and completed his Camping Club Youth Test – at the age of 70.

Jim continued to go caravanning, along with wife Rita, until just three years ago. He remains the Vice President of the British Caravan Club, the latest in a long line of titles held by the former soldier.

Caravan park wins best touring site award in Dorset

by Ed Davies

Family and staff at a Dorset holiday park are celebrating after being named as the county’s overall park winner in the keenly contested Dorset Tourism Awards

Wareham Forest Tourist Park scooped the top gold accolade in the competition which celebrates Dorset’s top tourism providers.

The announcement of Wareham Forest Tourist Park’s success was made at the Dorset Tourism Awards’ glittering final in October, held at the Bovington Tank Museum.

For the Birch family, the honour completes a hat-trick of awards received this summer by the park which is based in the picturesque town of Wareham with direct access to Wareham Forest.

In July, the business joined a small elite of UK caravan parks flying the coveted AA Gold Pennant, the most prestigious award given out by the AA to its highest rated parks.

In order to qualify for the award, Wareham Forest Tourist Park was subjected to a rigorous inspection regime which scrutinised almost every aspect of its facilities and services.

The verdict was that the business could truly be described as a caravan and camping park right at the top of its game.

Next came the news that the tranquil 55-acre park had once again received the prestigious David Bellamy Conservation Award at its maximum gold level.

The award was made in recognition of the raft of initiatives taken by the family owners to protect its wildlife-rich natural environment.

Wareham Forest Tourist Park was bought by husband-and-wife team Tony and Sarah Birch 13 years ago, and is today run by the couple with help from their daughter Chrissy and managers Adam and Nicky Wake.

From the start they have invested much time and energy into creating first-class surroundings for holidaymakers with their own touring caravan, motorhome or tent.

Their reward has been to see a continual increase in visitor numbers from the UK and overseas, and levels of loyalty which result in some 75% of guests each year making return visits.

As well as acres of unspoiled wooded parkland to explore, holidaymakers also enjoy a popular heated outdoor pool and first-class shower and toilet facilities.

The park also recently created a new children’s play area, new waste disposal points, and a “pooch pampering” facility where guests can treat their dogs to a warm shower.

Tony Birch said that achieving the gold distinction in the Dorset Tourism Awards was especially pleasing as the park had never before entered the competition:

“This is a fantastic honour to win because the awards are judged across a wide range of criteria, including the hospitality provided and the quality of welcome enjoyed by guests,” he said.

“That’s why a large share of the credit should go to our staff, for they help to create the relaxed and friendly atmosphere here which guests so often mention in reviews.

“We have always tried to put our personal stamp on Wareham Forest Tourist Park, and to run the park along sustainable lines – which is why all three awards are a wonderful encouragement.

“I hope the resulting publicity will benefit all tourism businesses in the region by highlighting what a great place Dorset is for family holidays,” added Tony.

The park is a member of the Best of British group which comprises some 50 independently owned parks in Britain which have all achieved recognition for their high quality standards.
