New, updated Swift caravans for 2017

Producing its first prototypes back in 1964, Elddis has a long history of building caravans and, over the last five decades, the company has continued to build upon its reputation for manufacturing award winning, affordable tourers and motorhomes with a strong and widespread retailer network. Elddis caravans are manufactured alongside their sister brand, Buccaneer Caravans, in a large, modern production facility in Consett, County Durham.

Since its inception in the sixties, Elddis has undergone various incarnations. In 1998, the company was brought under the Explorer Group umbrella along with two other established caravan manufacturers, Buccaneer and Compass. A decade later the Explorer Group launched the Xplore range, making it the UK’s second largest caravan and motorhome manufacturer.

Goodbye Explorer – Hello Elddis

In 2009, the company announced a departure from its large, mass production business model to concentrate on building a single primary range of standard products.

With Elddis being the company’s longstanding and most reputable product, they rebranded the business under the original Elddis moniker. The successful Xplore range became the Elddis Xplore and the Compass range was dropped from the portfolio until reemerging like a phoenix from the ashes just two years ago.

The Buccaneer brand remains as the stand alone sister brand of Elddis, representing the high quality, luxury end of the market.

A new dawn

Elddis Caravans source parts from around the globe to keep prices competitive and continue to invest in product development and production processes to ensure they deliver great quality yet affordable tourers.

Since rebranding, Elddis have gone from strength to strength, establishing themselves as market leaders with reasonably priced caravans.

In the summer of 2012, the company rolled out a major rethink of the way it builds caravans and motorhomes. By switching over to the SoLiD Construction system, a robust method that uses industrial-grade adhesives instead of screws and bolts, allowing the company to now claim exceptional levels of strength, lightness and dryness.

Innovations for 2017

New eight-feet-wide, twin-axle touring caravans arrive for 2017 from the Explorer Group. A completely new Compass caravan range has been launched. And there’s a new, lightweight island-bed Xplore model.

Two of the new 2.45m-wide (eight feet) touring caravans are in the Elddis Avanté range. Two more are in the all-new Compass range. Both are 2.45m wide; that’s almost 20cm wider than other models in the Avanté range.

The first ever family-layout Buccaneer is launched. And there’s a range of four caravans with metallic blue sides; these are the four Compass Camino models.

Elddis Affinity

If it is not broken do not fix it seems the likely mantra of Elddis bosses when contemplating whether to tamper with their Affinity range.

Despite dropping the 540 model for 2017, there are no real changes going into the new year.

However, there are a number of modifications throughout the fleet, which now stands at five-strong.

Elddis Avante

For 2017, Elddis has kept all but the 566 and 576 Avante models, while introducing three new models to the mix.

The first of the new models, the Avante 554, is a single-axle layout featuring a retractable transverse bed and rear bathroom/dressing area.

Perhaps more excitingly, Elddis has also introduced two additional new models for the ’17 season, namely the Avante 840 and the Avante 866 – both of which are 8ft wide.

Elddis Crusader

This year sees the Crusader Supersirocco bow out as five models remain, namely the Mistral, Aurora, Storm, Tempest and Supercyclone.

A total of six models have been made available as another is added to the fleet, the six-berth Zephyr.

The Zephyr, a twin-axle caravan oozing five-star luxury, comes complete with a retractable transverse fixed bed at the rear and spacious living room at the front, separated by a luxurious washroom and shower room.

It is possible to section off the rear bedroom, as well as the living area up front, to provide for more privacy too.

Elddis Xplore

For the new season the Xplore range has seen the introduction of the four-berth 554 model.

The 554 features a retractable transverse fixed island bed and rear bathroom, as well as a spacious end-bathroom/dressing area and bright, airy lounge.

The compact camper offers a lightweight solution for all your caravanning needs at a maximum technically permissible laden mass of 1350kgs.

Buccaneer

Elddis’s original 8ft wide range, the Buccaneer, returns for 2017 but gone is the Cutter model, which sees itself replaced with two new vehicles.

The two new models, namely the Commodore and Galera, have been introduced for the new season joining the Clipper, Schooner, and Cruiser.

While maintaining its size across the range, the Buccaneer has seen changes made to the the front by way of a new panel, new windows and new gas locker door.

Innovations for 2016

Elddis Affinity

The multi-award-winning Affinity is available in six single-axle models for 2016, all featuring Alde’s central heating system and Sky-Scape panoramic sunroof, and all weighing in at less than 1500kgs MTPLM.

New for 2016 is the large Heki Lux ‘Stargazer’ roof which comes incorporated on all models, which allows for an abundance of light to enter into the caravan during the day, whilst enabling you to stargaze at night.

Other enhancements for 2016 come by way of a new ‘Hydrangea’ designed upholstery design featuring Ozio Hi-performance construction, and snazzy ‘Reno Walnut’ craftsman-built cabinetry.

Space saving also comes as standard, with Elddis looking to make more room onboard, thanks to the inclusion of retractable beds on the Affinity 554 and 550 models, creating an extra 400mm floor space in the process.

Inside the shower, a new EcoCamel Orbit water saving Halo shower which uses Aircore technology should provide for a decent power shower, whilst new bathroom accessories provide for an updated feel.

Elddis Avante

Featuring ‘StrongLite’ high strength aluminium sides and fully bonded awning rails with no screws, the Avante sees eight models being made available of 2016, including the new four-berth 554.

A new panoramic Sky-Scape sunroof as standard across the range allows for a plethora of light throughout each Avante, whilst a new front panel design with three opening double glazed windows will also allow for a feeling of space.

New ‘Marone’ craftsman built cabinetry complements the contrasting two tone ‘Fantasie Brushed’ flush-fit kitchen units with chrome inset details, making the Avante range one to be proud of. ‘Mayfair’ upholstery with Ozio hi-perofrmance construction adds to the look.

Additional extras for 2016 include retractable beds on the 554 and 550 models, creating 400mm additional floor space, new external graphics, and a new Whale Expanse dual fuel underslung 8-litre water heater, and Whale iVan touch screen intuitive control panel, making the Grade 3 thermal insulation a caravan for all seasons.

Elddis Crusader

Featuring a total of six layouts for 2016, including the new Elddis Crusader provides those looking for a luxurious getaway exactly that.

From the sporty, head-turning exterior to the impressive and lavish interior, each Crusader is built upon high strength one piece aluminium sides in a new ‘Champagne’ colour scheme whilst, inside, new Aquaclean ‘Vinci’ upholstery featuring Ozio hi-performance construction complement the ‘Marone’ craftsman built cabinetry with ‘Ash Prato’ feature strips.

When it comes to saving space, the retractable bed featured on the Mistral, Aurora and Storm models allow for an additional 400mm of floor space, and an abundance of light comes courtesy of the panoramic Sky-Scape. Light will be the only thing getting in though, with Aero Privacy flush-lit double-glazed side windows with night ventilation position ensuring privacy.

An exclusive EcoCamel Orbit water saving Halo shower head which uses Aircore technology, should enable you to feel right at home and, inside the kitchen, ‘Fantasie Brushed’ kitchen units completes the look.

Elddis Xplore

The Elddis Xplore is renowned as one of the lightest, smallest and most affordable caravans on the market – and 2016 is no different.

Built using SoLiD construction, the Xplore range is ideal for families and couples alike and feature a number of specifications to enable a wonderful time away whatever the weather thanks to the Rapid Heat-up 8 litre Whale heating system and Grade 3 thermal insulation, truly making it a range for all seasons.

Six layouts are available for 2016, all of which benefit from new ‘Marone’ craftsman built cabinetry and ‘Cosimo’ upholstery providing an updated look. Contrasting ‘Fantasie brushed’ flush-lit kitchen units and granite effect deep worktops in Mineral Creme allow for a kitchen experience similar to that in the home.

Owing to the light weight, the Xplore is extremely easy to tow, virtually by any car, and its price offers an alternative to those looking to buy a secondhand caravan.

Buccaneer

As sister brand of Elddis, the Buccaneer range is known for pushing the boundaries when it comes to luxury and 2016 is no different.

Featuring five layouts, including the new four-berth Clipper, the Buccaneer is no average caravan – at 8ft wide, and being one of the most opulent caravans on the market, how can it be?

The sheer size of the Buccaneer enables a plethora of space throughout, allowing for a number of unique layouts which would otherwise be impossible to implement.

Specification is also second to none and, for 2016, the Buccaneer features a one-piece exterior door and one-piece GRP sides in silver.

Inside, new lexington upholstery featuring Ozio hi-performance construction creates a light and airy feel, enhanced by the amount of light created by the ‘Sky Scape’ panoramic sunroof with LED ambient lighting.

Elsewhere, a retractable bed inside the Cutter, Cruiser, Caravel and Clipper creates even more space.

Truly a caravan for all seasons, the Buccaneer features Alde 24 hour programmable central heating and water heating, as well as a 100w Truma roof mounted solar panel.

The range also features a remote-controlled hydraulic self-levelling system allowing for an easy pitch wherever you are.

The Sun shines award spotlight on holiday parks group

by Ed Davies

Holiday parks group Abbeyford Leisure has been named this October as one of the top places to work in the UK as part of The Sun newspaper’s Best of British initiative

The company, with three holiday parks in Wales and three in Scotland, ranked higher than many big brand names including Tesco and Premier Inn.

The award-winning leisure group is the only holiday park operator in the country to receive such recognition.

Abbeyford Leisure chairman, David J Evans, said: “We are delighted to be recognised as one of the best companies to work for in Britain.

“We have a hugely dedicated team of employees across our award-winning holiday parks in Scotland and Wales, and The Sun’s Best of British accolade is testament to how we, as a team, work together to make Abbeyford Leisure not only an enjoyable company to work for, but a company where your career can flourish.

“Our staff retention is second to none – we’re proud of that and proud of our team.”

The Sun Awards celebrate UK-owned companies which create jobs, build local communities, and keep the economy growing.

Staff vote for their own firms, ranking them on dozens of factors including career progression, community support and working environment.

Government business secretary Greg Clark, said: “It’s an honour to work with Britain’s small, medium and large businesses every day, and one of the UK’s greatest strengths is that we are a nation of entrepreneurs.

“Smaller firms are lynch-pins of local economies and big-name firms take on the world, employing millions and driving growth.

“It is great to see these businesses recognised by The Sun for doing right for the people.

“At a time of great change, we can be inspired by the fact more jobs have been created in Britain over the last decade than in the rest of Europe put together.”

Takeover worth £1.2 billion in works for caravan giant Parkdean

by Ed Davies

The former bosses of one of the companies which merged to form Parkdean Resorts are working on an audacious £1.2bn deal to buy back the enlarged caravan and camping business

David Boden and Nigel Brewster, the former chief executive and finance boss of Park Resorts, are understood to be working on the buyout with private equity firm BC Partners, owner of Cote restaurant chain and car rental site Car Trawler.

Sunday Telegraph sources say Mr Boden and his former management team have been in discussion with BC Partners about a takeover for the last few months.

Parkdean Resorts, the UK’s biggest holiday parks business, was created last year following a merger of Parkdean, backed by buyout house Alchemy Partners, and Park Resorts, owned by Electra Private Equity.

Less than a year later Electra and Alchemy have hired bankers at Rothschild to sell the business. First-round bids are expected to be made within the fortnight.

The company’s owners have scrapped the idea of pursuing a stock market flotation after a number of London listings were cancelled in the last two weeks.

The auction for Parkdean has drawn interest from a roster of the biggest names in private equity including Advent, Carlyle, CVC and the UK’s Universities Superannuation Scheme.

One City source said that although private equity players have recently taken a dim view of companies that only operate in the UK following the EU Referendum vote, bidders have been encouraged by a rising demand for UK-based “staycations”, which will increase as the sterling slump makes it more expensive for people to travel abroad.

During the summer Parkdean Resorts posted an 11pc increase in holiday bookings while underlying earnings last year were £120m.
Electra continues to own 45pc in the business while Alchemy and management own the rest.

Former Park Resorts chairman Alan Parker, the former chairman of Whitbread, became chairman of the enlarged company following the merger. It is not known whether he is involved in any new deal.

Parkdean has 73 holiday parks across the country and makes more than £100m in annual profits.

The company also sells caravans and holiday lodges, which industry sources have cautioned makes this arm of the business slightly vulnerable to dips in consumer confidence.

Park Resorts’ caravan parks were spread mainly across northern England, the Lake District and Scotland, while Parkdean Holidays, as the company was then known, ran holiday parks across the south-west of England.

Video shows caravan veer off road when trying to overtake

by Ed Davies

This dashcam footage shows the terrifying moment a caravan driver careered into a barrier as he tried to overtake a truck

The shocking video shows the white four-wheel drive roaring past the big rig in the outside lane before losing control of the camper van it was towing.

The male driver was driving along the M1 on Monday when he smashed into the barrier and ended up in a ditch at the side of the road.

Fortunately the truck driver senses danger when the vehicle passed by and slowed down to give it space.

The truck driver, called Paul, sent the footage into the Dash Cam Owners Australia Facebook page.

Along with the video, he said: ‘How not, to overtake a B double when towing a caravan. Old mate was a bit shaken but OK.’

Caravan holiday park donates thousands to charities

by Ed Davies

Thanks to the generosity of its visitors, Mother Ivey’s Bay Holiday Park, near Padstow, is donating £2,500 each to two local charities

The money has been raised through the Cornish park’s visitor gifting scheme and will be donated to charities, the Cornwall Wildlife Trust and Wadebridge Foodbank.

Guests booking online are offered the opportunity of adding a pound to the cost of their stay, to be donated to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

For every pound gifted, the park matches that sum to donate to Wadebridge Foodbank. Customers can opt out of the donation if they wish.

The idea of introducing the scheme came whilst park owner, Patrick Langmaid, was visiting a caravan trade show in Hampshire.

His hotel bill included a small, optional, donation for the protection of the nearby New Forest national park.

Mr Langmaid said: “I could see the beauty of the New Forest and could see how the scheme would work.

“I thought it was a great idea and that Cornwall’s natural beauty could benefit in the same way, so I introduced it at our holiday park.”

Best ever show sales for Swift touring caravans

by Ed Davies

Swift Group surpassed all expectations at this year’s Motorhome and Caravan Show with their best ever performance in touring caravans and the third best in motorhomes

Sales at the show alone are projected to exceed £35 million, boosting an already high start to the season with total retail sales from September exceeding £55mn.

The Motorhome and Caravan Show is the industry’s most important retail event of the year and the first opportunity to showcase the major new launches of Swift Basecamp and Escape.

On touring caravans, all ranges performed extremely well with growth of 11% versus last year but the star performance came from Sprite, the UK’s number one caravan range, with growth of over 20%.

Across all ranges, fixed beds layouts proved most popular especially the novel mid-transverse washroom.

“I am delighted by the strong start we have achieved to the 2017 season underpinned by this record breaking show,” said group commercial director Nick Page.

“The success this year supports Swift Group’s approach which is based on innovative products, stylish design and high quality construction all packaged together to offer outstanding value.

“New product launches and major initiatives, such as Swift Command, where we are the only manufacturer to offer an APP based vehicle management system, ensure we retain our position as the UK’s leading manufacturer.”

Swift’s new crossover camping vehicle: Basecamp, opened the entire show and the three models were inundated with show attendees throughout the six days.

Targeted at the ‘young at heart’ outdoor adventurer, Basecamp attracted interest from a wide range of people.

Over 25% of the year’s volumes has been sold and the first export order secured from Swift’s Korean partner Bluebird.

For Motorhomes, the outstanding performance was the new Escape range with growth of over 40% compared to last year.

Visitor rise at Camping and Caravanning sites

by Ed Davies

The Camping and Caravanning Club enjoyed a growth of 5% on last year in the number of campers on its network

The club has capitalised on good weather throughout summer in particular and benefited from a wider trend towards staycations within the UK.

Traditionally seen as a low-cost holiday option, more and more people are turning to the pastime as a leisure activity that offers an increasingly high standard and wide choice of accommodation.

Regionally, the areas with biggest year-on-year growth are Wales, where the Club’s five sites saw an 18% increase in pitch night sales, Scotland which increased by 8% and the South West of England, which also grew by 8%.

Bob Hill, Club Sites director, said: “We’re thrilled with the Club’s success in 2016. Enjoying our highest ever membership has clearly extended to more bookings made on our network of campsites.

“We have helped hundreds of thousands of campers enjoy a break away this year, with well over one million pitch nights on Club Sites.

“The Club is committed to improving the provision of hardstanding pitches across each of our sites to make it easier for members and non-members alike to explore the best Britain has to offer throughout autumn and into the winter.”

At individual site level, Cambridge, Crowden in the Peak District and California Cross in Devon have all experienced increases in the numbers of campers, with each running unique offers on pitches.

The discounts, redeemable only when booking online, have made pitching up on more than 30 Club Sites more cost-effective for families and midweek arrivals throughout the year, including the peak camping season of June-September.

Largest ever UK leisure vehicle survey finalised

by Ed Davies

Compiled from over 40,000 different responses from caravan and motorhome owners, the UK’s largest ever survey of leisure vehicles has been finalised

Having been commissioned by The Caravan Club, the survey takes an in-depth look at vehicles, the manufacturers that dominate the market, satisfaction levels and future innovations.

There are a total of more than one million leisure vehicles owned in the UK, many leisure vehicle owners regularly stay on Caravan Club sites.

The survey shows the bulk of caravan market ownership is dominated by manufacturers such as Adria, Bailey, Coachman, Elddis, Lunar, Sterling and Swift.

While there are more players in motorhome manufacture (15 brands from 10 manufacturers represent 75% of the market), the top five are Auto-Sleepers, Auto-Trail, Autocruise, Elddis and Swift.

A staggering 89% of caravan owners and 91% of motorhome owners are happy with their vehicles – excellent news and something manufacturers and retailers should be proud of.

“There is an undeniably high level of satisfaction among caravanners and motorhomers,” said The Caravan Club’s director general, Nick Lomas.

“We are confident the findings of the Leisure Vehicle Survey, which collected over 7.5m pieces of information, will help members and consumers to make informed choices on their leisure vehicle purchases.

“Caravanners and motorhomers enjoy exploring, both here and abroad, and The Club is committed to raising standards to ensure their continued satisfaction with this pastime.

“We would like to thank everyone who took the trouble to take part in the survey.”

According to the survey, once bitten by the leisure vehicle bug, fans are in for the long-term and keen to keep up with the latest models and trends.

Over half (52%) of existing leisure vehicle owners predict they will be upgrading their caravans and motorhomes within 2-3 years, with 51% anticipating spending between £10-20,000.

What is more, the quality of caravans and motorhomes is improving and the survey shows satisfaction with vehicles has increased.

Since 2011 there has been a noticeable uplift across industry standards with new construction methods having a positive impact on customer satisfaction.

Leisure vehicle manufacturing and holiday spend is worth in excess of £6bn to the UK economy, the sector employs over 130,000 people and is currently going from strength to strength with no sign of slowing down.

New finance deal could boost leisure vehicle industry

by Ed Davies

Those looking to holiday in the UK in the future could see themselves joined by ever swelling numbers as companies begin to offer personal contract purchase for caravans and motorhomes

Vehicle data expert, Glass’s, believes PCP – which is an increasingly popular way of financing new cars – could revolutionise the leisure vehicle market.

The introduction of PCP for motorhomes could make leisure vehicles much more affordable and potentially bring a wave of new buyers.

Recent industry figures and reports have shown a boom in the motorhome industry this year.

Rupert Pontin, Glass’s director, said: “Touring caravans and motorhomes are not cheap vehicles and you can easily spend £40,000 on the latter.

“However, the use of finance products in the market has tended to be quite limited, meaning that the typical buyer is an older person with savings.

“That has changed in recent months, with the arrival of a handful of finance companies entering the market. Now, the situation could change quite quickly.

“The touring caravan and motorhome market has been quite buoyant in recent years but we believe that this development could provide a further boost.”

A PCP is a form of finance similar to a hire purchase agreement but instead of paying off the entire value of the vehicle in equal monthly installments like an HP, you are effectively only paying off the depreciation via your monthly installments on a PCP.

“The key advantages of PCPs are that they make vehicles much more affordable and accessible,” he added.

“Crucially, they will allow younger buyers with families who would like a caravan or motorhome for stay-at-home holidays to seriously consider taking out a PCP, typically over five to seven years.”

Mr Pontin said that the availability of PCPs could make leisure vehicles of this kind as accessible to the average family as buying a second car.

“Some of the headline figures that are being seen in the market are very attractive and, as competition grows across the sector for PCPs, we would expect them to become even more viable as a monthly expenditure for more and more people,” he said.

“Certainly, if you were planning to use a motorhome for two or three family holidays a year, then the maths stacks up pretty well against other holiday choices.”
