Caravan lovers told to go west for best beaches

by Chris Jefferies

Touring caravan holidaymakers looking to catch some sun this summer may be glad to learn that the beaches of the south west have dominated a recent survey to find the UK’s best sandy coastal spots. TripAdvisor’s poll found that St Ives was the best beach in the UK, as voted for by the website’s users, followed by its Cornwall neighbour Newquay.

Other top reasons to go west on your caravan holiday include the beaches at Bournemouth and Weymouth, as the Devon tourist hotspots came third and fourth respectively.

But it was St Ives that took the biggest plaudits, as the seaside town even made it into the top ten beaches in Europe, beating off several foreign hotspots in the process.

Emma O’Boyle, TripAdvisor spokeswoman, said: “Vast numbers of Brits jet off to traditional Mediterranean beaches every year, yet a British beach resort has out-classed all its Spanish, French and Italian counterparts in the awards.”

Van driver branded `utterly stupid` for towing static caravan

by Chris Jefferies

A judge has described a van driver from Nottingham as “utterly stupid” after the motorist dragged a static caravan for a mile, leaving scrapes in the road behind him. Nottingham Crown Court heard how local man Kevin Hill had bought the unit for £300 and towed it behind his Ford Transit at the snail-like pace of five miles per hour.

Whilst caravan drivers are often criticised for holding up traffic, Mr Hill’s shenanigans were described by Judge Michael Stokes QC as an obvious “risk to other road users”, the Nottingham Post reported.

A witness said that the caravan had no braking system or warning lights, was obstructing cars and was clearly too big for the single-carriageway road.

Judge Stokes sentenced Mr Hill, 44, to a community order for 12 months and a curfew for two months between set hours, as well as taking away his licence for a year.

Coachman launches national caravan service centre

by Chris Jefferies

Caravan manufacturer Coachman has given its seal of approval at the opening of a new national caravan service centre in Warwickshire.

Jim Hibbs, the company’s managing director, was invited to conduct the opening ceremony of the new centre, owned by leading caravan dealer Raymond James.

The 12-bay centre is being launched after the dealer recorded its most successful year to date in which it began selling Coachman caravans.

Mr Hibbs spoke of the caravan industry’s bright future before unveiling the centre, which has National Caravan Council approval.

“Our relationship with the dealers has always been incredibly important,” he said. “We always aim to provide them with quality caravans designed to withstand the tests of time.”

“With the resurgence in the domestic holiday market, these relationships will become even more important,” he added.

Raymond James Caravans is a Coventry-based dealer, which sells new and used caravans from companies such as Elddis and Buccaneer, as well as Coachman.

Caravan owners given new tyre pressure guidance

by Chris Jefferies

British motorists planning on towing a caravan on their holidays this summer have been given new advice on tyre pressure and axle loads.

TyreSafe has updated its caravan tyre safety leaflet, following technical discussions between the tyre industry and major caravan manufacturers.

Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe, said that it is important that caravan owners do not load their vehicle to more than 90 per cent of its maximum capacity.

“With the high levels of stress placed on caravan tyres, it is essential that owners not only inflate their tyres to the correct pressures, but also make sure they do not overload them,” he said.

The new leaflet, which can be downloaded for free, includes simplified and updated load and inflation pressure tables.

Mr Jackson added that anyone who is unsure of what to look for when assessing the state of their caravan’s tyres should consult their local tyre dealer or workshop.

Reader Review: Adria Adora 612UP

by Nigel Plant

The Adria Adora 612UP is a 6 berth touring caravan with a difference. Built to European specifications, it affords more space and more spec on a single axle. Nigel Plant and his wife Patricia have been the proud owners of their Adora 612UP for the last eighteen months, and share their user experiences with us here on Caravan Times.

Setting up:

The van is very simple and straight forward to hitch up, and although it is a heavy van we use a Power Mover for hitching etc. which makes it simple and straight forward. The Al-Ko hitch lock is smooth to connect and the electrics have never failed us.

From the outside:

Looks wise, we find it is a real head turner. The bodyshell has remained bright and clear and the windows are easy to clean. The front A-frame step is an added bonus for getting up high when cleaning, although it creaks a bit at times.

The front window is one large pane which gives clear views from inside. We would have preferred a dark tint as the transparency allows passersby to peer straight in which does create a bit of a privacy issue. All the doors and windows close with a solid feel and the click-stop window latches work ok, although one sticks occasionally and requires a skewer to release it.

The wet locker is a real plus giving plenty of under bed storage from the outside, and the front locker has loads of space; two gas bottles and loads of camping clutter can be stored easily.

The toilet locker has the integral flush tank, which can last two of us a week easily and the water pump is easy to attach. The waste exit perhaps needs attention as it comes out directly behind the trim with little room to attach pipes. The battery locker is about the norm but fitting a larger battery can be a bit of a squeeze, especially if you have a motor mover connected as well.

One of my only problems with the exterior is the legs; the rear legs are straight forward but the front pair tucks beneath the body and you need to bend down and reach under to get the winder in – this can be a pain, especially if it’s raining.

The long A-frame sits on a single axle, yet despite having an MTPLM of 1,700kg – it’s a very stable tow.

On the inside:

The overall feel of the inside is spacious, contemporary and modern. It’s a fixed bed six berther with two doubles as well as the bunks and it certainly does not fit in to the ‘normal’ looking category of caravans.

Living space:

The front lounge area is U-shaped with a large, heavy table. The seating is not the most comfortable and we tend to store the table in the awning or just leave it at home if we don’t need it. The side dinette gives the two of us plenty of room and there are two spotlights providing plenty of illumination.

The over head storage is more than enough; under bed, under seat, above head, it seems to be never ending! And there a deep, thin shelved area between the lounge and dinette, which we use to stash bits and bobs in.

The wardrobe would be small for a family trip away for a week, because the heating conduit, mains power switch and fuse box are all located in there. The spot for the TV aerial is marked in the ceiling but there isn’t an actual aerial which is a little confusing, but we use a satellite dish and booster lead so this is not an issue for us…

Gramping: Eurocamp urges caravan lovers to take the grandparents

Chris Jefferies

Extended-family holidays are on the rise, with grandparents far more likely to come along on an outdoors holiday than they were two years ago, Eurocamp has claimed.

In its latest survey, the European holiday expert found that 75 per cent of families with young children are planning on taking grandma and grandpa with them on their major annual trip away.

Furthermore, Eurocamp bookings for extended families camping or caravanning have risen by 325 per cent over the past two years.

Chris Hilton, head of brand at Eurocamp, said that this new phenomenon was partly down to a desire to spread childcare duties throughout the family.

“Families have always used holidays as a chance to become closer, by spending quality time together away from the stresses and strains of normal life. Grandparents are clearly considered an important part of that unit,” he added.

Eurocamp offers a range of caravan and motorhome holidays throughout the UK, Europe and the US.

Devon caravan park wins excellence award

by Chris Jefferies

An independently run caravan and holiday park in Devon is the proud recipient of a major tourism excellence award, it has been announced.

Woodovis Park, near Tavistock in Devon, has been rewarded with a British Quality Foundation (BQF) award under the Tourism Business Excellence Programme.

BQF awards are normally handed out to much larger organisations, so the owners, John and Dorothy Lewis, said that they were thrilled by the accolade.

“With this achievement under our belts, guests can rest assured that they’ll enjoy an exceptional holiday experience, which is what matters most,” Mr Lewis said.

The holiday destination has also recently won a gold medal in the Devon Tourism Awards and it was a finalist in the Hoseseasons Diamond Award for exceptional quality and outstanding customer service.

Woodovis Park offers premium on-site facilities, such as a heated swimming pool, a sauna, and a shop, which offers freshly baked bread and pastries.

Furthermore, caravan enthusiasts visiting the five-star Devon holiday park can choose from 50 spacious pitches.
