A dark comedy that has been produced by Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright may have you looking at caravan trips in a whole different light.
Sightseers tells the story of a Midlands couple who embark on a tourer-based excursion in the north of England which soon takes a turn for the dark and twisted.
It has been developed from an idea by writer-actor couple Chris Oram and Alice Lowe, who faced a number of obstacles in attempting to get the caravanning tale made.
“We developed it as a television idea but didn’t get anywhere with it because all the channels said it was too dark originally,” Lowe explained to Herald Scotland.
That all changed when they pitched the idea to Wright, who agreed to produce the film, with director Ben Wheatley also joining the project fresh from his work on the blood-curdlingly brutal Kill List, which garnered widespread acclaim.
Their efforts to get the film made appear to be worth it, with the film, which has already been shown at Cannes, being nominated for a variety of awards at this months Independant British Film Awards.
Writer Lowe explained to the news provider, that the film focuses primarily on “camping and what annoys people”.
He found that “It’s quite often children playing ball games. It’s a huge debate in the caravan world whether children should be allowed to play ball games or not.”
The result is this rather twisted but thoroughly entertaining film, which has already received rave reviews and is due to be released on November 30th.
So what do you think? It’s received good reviews and looks like it might offer a good insight into the world of touring for people less familiar with it which is better than a lot of films have managed.
