Caravan owners warned of thieves over May bank holiday

security devices like wheel locks are recommended for caravanners to prevent theft

The May bank holiday presents the chance for many caravan owners to take their tourer out for a mini break but they are being urged to be wary of thieves.

Shield Total Insurance highlighted statistics that showed a major spike in caravan thefts during the same period 12 months ago and holidaymakers need to ensure that they have taken every step possible to avoid becoming the victim of potential crimes.

The caravan insurance provider noted that 34 per cent of its covered mobile homes were either broken into or stolen over the 2012 May Day bank holiday.

Officials explained that owners should invest in security devices, keep doors, windows and rooflights locked and not to leave anything on show to ensure that their holiday is not ruined by an opportunistic thief.

Stuart Craig, Shield’s sales and marketing manager, said: “It’s those without adequate security or insurance in place that are most at risk of loss so we are asking all caravanners to keep their belongings safe and secure this bank holiday.”
