The implementation of text message radar guns may spell the end for text messaging when driving
In a move which seems to be for the better and looks set to keep us and fellow road users that little bit safer, a US speed gun manufacturer is in the process of developing a device that will enable police to detect when a driver is sending a text message.
Virginia-based electronics company, ComSonics, is currently looking at developing the tool based on the premise there is a difference in frequencies sent by mobile phones while texting when compared to making a call. Hands free calls made when driving are still legal in both the US and UK.
Although already well under development, ComSonics has stated there are still legal issues needed to be ironed out prior to being cleared to be used by law enforcement.
Despite the premise behind the device being pretty worthy of a mention, we here at CaravanTimes can’t help but wonder how police officers using the device will be able to determine whether a driver or passenger is texting once the alarm bells start ringing or, for that matter, whether advancements in technology allowing handsfree texting could blur the lines between what’s legal and what isn’t.
Whatever happens, it’s pretty well known that whenever something like this is introduced in the US it’s usually adopted in Blighty a short while afterwards, so watch this space and we’ll keep you updated on any details as and when we get them.
